As the limited express train nears the station at Kaga-onsen it slows a bit and on the horizon the hillside gives way to an open view of the towering golden figure of the kannon (kwanon) bosatsu (bodhisattva), cradling an infant in a gesture of mercy and compassion, two of the attributes of the Buddhist world view.
