This is why Kratos should have seen Loki's powers coming in God of War Ragnarök

In God of War 2018, Kratos admits to his son that they are both gods. Atreus, who is later revealed to be the Norse god Loki at the game's conclusion, immediately wants to know if he can use his godly powers to turn into an animal, specifically a wolf.

In 2022's sequel, God of War Ragnarök, that innocent question of "Can I turn into an animal?" is answered definitively when Loki transforms into both a fearsome wolf and a massive bear.

These transformations are triggered by intense emotions at first, and are out of the young god's control. However, through the course of the game (and with guidance from both Angrboda and Kratos), Loki is able to control his powers and use them constructively.

In Norse mythology, Loki is a shapeshifter. However, Kratos would not know about this. Instead, Kratos would know about his own father Zeus' ability to change into various animals. Since Zeus is technically Loki's grandfather in the game, Kratos should have at least been open to the possibility that his son might develop shapeshifting powers.

My hunch is that Eric Williams, Game Director for God of War Ragnarök, wanted to build on that question from the previous game, which was directed by his friend and co-worker at Sony Santa Monica, Cory Barlog.

Atreus: Can I turn into an animal? Kratos in his head: Oh no, is my son gonna say stupid stuff again? Atreus: actually turns into an animal Kratos: ...
  • I honestly love that they made Loki, the god famous for transforming into animals and doing weird shit, descended from Zeus. ZEUS, the god famous for transforming into animals and doing WEIRD SHIT. Perfect way to blend the mythology
  • Atreus: Are you sure I can't turn into a wolf? Kratos: You are welcome to surprise me? Atreus transforms into a wolf Kratos:Hm.

I love that line because you have kratos finally opening up about this incredibly important truth and atreus is just such a kid going "what superpowers do I have?"
  • I dare say the gods powers seem always tied to something they love or that is in their nature, Kratos is his spartan rage. Atreus loves animals and this was his first thought as a kid when he found he was a god so his powers shifted towards this.
  • @HuntersMoon.
I remembered this line when I was playing and I loved it. The fact he mentioned this in the last game as a child’s reaction to being a god. Turns out to be his god-hood power after all haha.

I mean it was already plausable given that Kratos' dad, Zeus, can shape shift. I think the only that came from his Giant heritage is are the dreams and soul magic.

I never noticed in my playthrough that he rips the Valkyrie in half

Atreus: Can I turn into an animal? Kratos thinking, remembering Zeus liked to turn into birds. Then remembering some of the stories he heard about Hercules. Kratos: If turn into an animal when you're older promise me you won't use it for mischief.

I still hope Atreus has spartan rage as it seemed like he began to use it in the second encounter with Modi.

And it would have been... if they kept the director that actually knew what was going on
  • This is what was trying to come out in GOW 2018, when Modi attested them and Atreus got sick. It activates at first with Atreus’s rage (like his father).

This kind of implies Kratos went "Can I punch gods in the face?" when he was little, if "Kratos should have seen Loki's powers coming" based on that line. Not sure if that's saying he definitely couldn't have seen it coming or he actually might have said that when he was a kid.
  • I would like to see a big time jump where Atreus is grown with family teaching his Children his father lessons and discipline and realizing what his father went through teaching him at a rebellious age.

Given Kratos's dad commonly turned into animals he really should have expected it.

zeus turned into an eagle a couple of times. he must have gotten an affinity from him in this recontextualized story. either that on this has no connection and atreus was destined for powers like these since loki in myth could do it.
