Can we use eggs to time eggs? In this video, we use Lego to build a totally oversized machine to test this ridiculous concept.

This lego technic machine works sort of like a clock. An escapement mechanism only permits very slow rotation of the gears, creating a ‘tick-tock’ motion and sound. The sound itself is quite satisfying. Powering this mechanism is a belt that’s connected to a basket of eggs. This provides rotational energy via gravity as the eggs pull on the gears. If we set it up juuuust right, we can time the contraption to measure 6 minutes: egg-sactly what we need for a nice boiled egg. Unfortunately, for this machine, that means we need a lot of heigh. And now it takes up half my kitchen!

“But what if I want a hard-boiled egg??”, you say. “And what if I don’t want it to take up my entire kitchen?” Well I’ve got you covered. I also built a smaller version that can time up to 20 minutes on a single charge, allowing us to time anything up to 20 mins!

If you’d like to see more behind the scenes while I build these contraptions, and help me work on them, you can join my channel membership available under the video. I appreciate all the support everyone has given on this channel so far!

“If it ain’t broke, break it and make it your own” 😂
  • While the first timer has a very inefficient escapement, I don't think I've ever seen a 2 tooth escape wheel before, so that's pretty impressive.

this is stupid in the best way possible. Well done. You earned a subscriber

well you know what they say, you cant make an egg timer without breaking a few eggs.
  • @EricChiEric
Now make an egg generator so you can cook the egg with eggs
  • More weight on the pendulum would have slowed down the mechanism without need of all that hight!

I love the content man. Keep it up and you’ll make it big for sure
  • @Vortex64
the fact that you used an egg timer to prop up a stopwatch on your phone lol

Some sort of generator might be fun. Charge a phone with lego, maybe?
  • Hmm. Weirdly useful if you eat soft boiled eggs for some reason. Personally I boil eggs for exactly 1 reason. Deviled eggs, and the hard setting on the second mechanism is still a little light for that. Plus the lack of audio indicators on the second mechanism is annoying. I wish to see this idea fulfilled as a third mechanism that flips over the signs onto piano keys or something.
