With rarity that rivals that of Legendary Pokemon, it's time to break down just how common each Mythical Pokemon really is.

I love the progression of mythical Gen 4: capture god Gen 8: heres a plantdeer that rides a horse or something idk lol
  • I always assumed all the Celebi from Pokémon 4ever were all the same Celebi from different points in time.
  • Actually, in Keldeo’s lore from BW games it was said that Virizion, Cobalion and Terrakion raised a Keldeo that got separated from its parents in a forest fire. So it mean at some point there were at least a few of them!

"Jirachi is the most rare" Me with my Colosseum bonus disc: my time has come. Time to mass produce these bad boys.

I love how Legends Arceus confirms that there is only one Arceus in the entire MULTIVERSE. The pokemon we know as Arceus is just a fragment of the real thing.
  • Technically Genesect was a derivative of a fossilized Pokemon, similar to Mewtwo is to Mew. Just because there may be fossils of an entire species Genesect was derived from doesn't make them Genesect, so Genesect should have been bumped up to the "Few of a Kind" category.

Jirachi is actually mentioned in the games. If you examine I think Shelly's room in Alpha Sapphire, you can read text that suggests she and Archie befriended one as kids.

With how prominent it is in legends and even one movie, Lucario might have been a mythical had Riolu not existed
  • Given what we know now with Legends Arceus, since the Arceus we know turned out to be a small fraction of Arceus’ existence, there’s always the possibility that Arceus could create multiples of these fractions

Mew is only rare if you don’t have the best pokeball: The $50 pokeball

Mew is considered a one of a kind because there were originally an abundance of mew. Thing is, mew is considered the ancestor of all Pokémon because it evolved into them. The mew evolved into other Pokémon until there was only one left. This is the only mew left in the Pokémon universe. That was just the canon story of why there is only one mew.

Well, this explains why I could find literally no info on Marshadow, my favorite Mythical.

I know this is older now, but the release of Pokemon Legends Arceus actually sort of disproves some of this. It is implied in the game at the end that the Arceus we get, and presumably the ones in all games, are not the Arceus, but avatars or representations of it gifted to us by the true Arceus. This explains why we are even able to capture the creator of everything and why it can be defeated by other Pokemon, and also suggests that while there is one true Arceus, there could potentially be multiple of the avatars we get, of the thing we know of as Arceus. For me personally, this also brings into question the existences of other mythicals and legendaries and the questions of if they are the true being or just avatars or representations of them, especially for the ones that are essentially gods themselves and should be the only of its kind, like Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, perhaps even Jirachi or others with powers that make sense to be able to do that. For older things, the Sin-Joh ruins event already brings in the possibility that all Pokemon could have duplicates created by Arceus. Is there only one Jirachi? Or has Arceus created multiple just so trainers can use them? Perhaps all of the random deliveries of mythical Pokemon are gifts created for the player by Arceus and not non-canon things?

I really like Meloetta and how it was surprisingly pretty good in competitive back in gen 6 due to it's mixed set.
  • I'll always be sad about how game freak abandoned meloetta, she's been my favorite ever since I saw her for the first time
  • @edwardmire8134
... Zarude’s literal Pokédex states he is common in his native region.... which may be in Gen 9 or further down the road... we still have his native region and the region mentioned by that rare relic in Alola or Kalos that hasn’t been seen yet.
  • There's word going around that Victini is in the Galar dex for the Crown Tundra, though they haven't found out where and how to get it yet.
  • @serge263
With Pokemon Legends: Arceus though, apparently Arceus can create copies of itself or a piece of itself. So, in essence, there can be multiple of Arceus. If Arceus so wills it.
