Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease of the skin that predominantly involves scaling and inflammation. Aside from its physical manifestations, psoriasis can also result in debilitating psychological effects for those suffering with it. While conventional medicine typically treats psoriasis from the outside in, the reality is that it is an issue that comes from within, and should be treated from the inside out. Things like your genetics, diet, and environmental influences can all contribute to psoriasis.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Todd LePine to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating psoriasis. They explain why addressing factors such as gut health, immunity, heavy metals, and more can all be instrumental in healing psoriasis.

Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.

  • ....Cleared lifelong psoriasis 13 years ago using diet, vegetable juicing and supplements. Probably one of the greatest achievements of my life, given how stubborn it was in the 40 years prior to that.
  • @jimmysmad
I completely healed my psoriasis through the carnivore diet. Took 6 months though. I had psoriasis for 30 years so happy it's gone

Great job Doc. I've been suffering from psoriasis now for 13 years and I just recently went vegan, got rid sugars, gluten, and all junk foods. Eating leafy greens and fruits only. Taking cod liver, fish oil, and other super food supps. I'm on day 2 and I'm starting to see a bit of a difference already. Wish me luck.

I have psoriasis for close to 30 years. With all due respect to all doctors research, i will tell you what works for me and not many people know if I really have psoriasis now. I take early morning sunshine daily for 30 minutes, apply only coconut oil in body daily before taking bath, eat only vegetarian diet, consume no liquor or tobacco, pray daily, donate monthly, sleep for 8 hours daily and do not take any other medicine. I am a software engineer and not a doctor but following a simple process above worked for me. Psoriasis may never go away or some day it will - accept it, follow basic process and stay happy. You will be much better in a month - try it. If you get better, please help someone else.

This podcast is straight up truth. Paoriasis is a root gut/digestive problem, not a root skin problem. And they are right the psychological effects of psoriasis are horrible. Amazing podcast.

Thank you so much for this, we live in Canada and I have shared this with my son. He suffers horribly from psoriatic arthritis and is being treated with biologics. It initially almost completely cleared his psoriasis that was over half his body with 48 hours but now he is struggling again, especially with his joints. He has just done a 3 day fast and is adding food back slowly, one by one. He is such a special young man and it breaks my heart to see him suffer with this. There is a genetic link on the paternal side.

OMG! I could be that person discussed at minute 13. Severe acne as a teen had me on tetracycline for 18 months. Totally destroyed my gut with issues (chronic) taking the purple pill for years, vitamin D was 8, gallbladder removed in 2000, psoriasis developed in 2001. Nothing had helped me for 22 plus years. Psoriasis only on lower legs and elbows/hands. Recently, I began to treat this as vascular and began a course of exercise on my stationary bike with MARKED improvement. This made me realize that the medical establishment failed me on all counts. I'm just going to now avoid gluten and choose better fruit options....and help myself.

  • I am in sustained remission of Rheumatoid Arthritis. I am not on any medication anymore. Thanks to gut microbiome replacement, using with proper antibiotics, probiotics and elimination diet. My recovery took two years and the duration depends on the patient. Everyone please listen to these guys. Holistic doctors are real heroes!

As someone who's been battling psoriasis (~20-30% coverage) for 2/3rds of my life, this is the single best source of advice I've found to deal with my condition. Biologics were necessary in my case to get things under control, but these topics discussed help KEEP it under control.
  • This podcast is sooooo best it’s really positive vibe and really got hope after suffering from psoriasis from 3 years.
  • @JohnMoseley
No ads for pharmaceuticals on UK TV, none of this 'ask your doctor...' stuff. It's great.
