China is increasingly active in Europe. Serbia has a particularly close relationship with China: Since 2010, the Chinese have invested some $8.5 billion there. But who are the people who keep things running on the ground?

When it comes to implementing China’s giant "New Silk Road" project, Serbia came in second place worldwide in 2022. But the story is complex: While Chinese companies are buying up the eastern part of the country around the Bor copper mine and extracting raw materials there on a large scale, second-generation Chinese in Serbia are beginning to realize their dreams.
Take Weiya Chen, a 25-year-old Chinese woman who wants to open her own café. Her family initially earned money thanks to a shoe store in Belgrade's Chinatown. Weiya has managed to rise to the middle class, but still remains Chinese at heart - at least when it comes to politics. Danilo Krivokapic, on the other hand, views the political opinions of his fellow Chinese with concern. Belgrade is in the process of installing cameras throughout the city - up to 8,000 are planned - that can be upgraded with Chinese facial recognition software. While Krivokapic fights to maintain European standards in data protection, the business world is pouncing on attractive offers from Chinese companies. Then there is 36-year-old Goran-Liu, who has made it his mission to mediate between Chinese and Serbian businesses - and offer the best deals.
Anna Tillack and Nikolaus Neumaier portray the people involved in this global project on the ground, ask about their motivations and dreams and offer a rare look behind the scenes of the otherwise closed community.

According to DW, Serbia doesn't need Chinese bridges and railways. Yeah, American bombs were far better.

To Europe, Serbia is just an outcast. To China, Serbia is a brother and a close friend. So why does Europe complain when Serbia gets close to China?

DW should do another video closer to home, "How much power does US has in Germany“...
  • If you replace the word "China" with the word USA, Australia, or any Western country, everything will be alright.
  • @gfhcoalition6631
Germany only started to remember Serbia when it lines up with China, just like the US suddenly remembered Africa😂
  • Because Serbia, in contrast to Germany, is a sovereign nation capable of making decisions on its own without seeking approval from the US.
  • I see it as a bit hypocritical to blame China for the pollution from the mines knowing fully well that mine had been polluting that region long before the Chinese bought it
  • @joethao2161
Well, I don't see anyone else helping Serbia with their infrastructures. When did the west started to care for other broken down countries anyway? The only way for the west to pay any attention to these other countries are, if China or Russia are both involved.
  • Europeans have impoverished Africa, and China has freed Africa from poverty 😊

What I see is that Serbia is becoming increasingly prosperous and has a bright future with the help of China

This documentary is full of prejudices and misleadings. Everything has good and bad sides, and China's investments in Serbia are no exception. What this video does is only focus on and exaggerate the bad sides, purposely neglecting the enormous benefits associated with all the investments, as the anti-China media has always been doing all the time. Serbian people and their government are intelligent enough to make the right decisions.
  • Dear Germans,China is building and helping Serbia, when Germans came to serbia both times Serbia was totally destroyed! So don't wory to much for Chinese because maybe in the future they will help you to get out from your troubles!
  • @Cardan011
There are many parallels between Chinese and Serbs in regards to interactions with West…..Chinese had a whole century of humiliation from the west, Serbia had its heartland ripped from it by West. As far as Germany horrific crimes in both World wars in Serbia it is well known . As a Serb I have never felt comfortable around Germans, no matter how superficially polite they are.
  • Serbia has right to be industrial super power in Europe. Germany should know it before undermining Serbia
  • @rylland_o
Why are these people always trying to make china the villian
  • @bboy349833591
Glad to see a lot of people with critical thinking skills. The western media just can’t live with the fact that China is genuinely help other countries to achieve a win-win result.
  • @alpine7991
Why did you go to interview Chinese workers with no one who speaks any chinese? You have a translator for serbian but none for chinese? Its pretty clear you werent actually interested in interviewing the workers.
  • @wroughtforge7547
China will never shut off food and water and medicine like what’s happening in Palestine.
  • @jacintochua6885
What has Germany done for Serbian economy since the break up of Warsaw Pact in the early 1990s? European countries are causing environmental havoc in the entire Africa . That's on top of exploitative prices Mining operations require digging deep pits. What don't your reporter understand about this? Its been done this way for centuries. Learn something.

When we saw how westerners are managing mines in Africa, we Serbs are much better with Chinese. At least they came with their own people to do the mining.
