@GreatSmokyMountains Thanks for the reply and you're right about snakes. I walked off the trail on the way to Abram Falls and had a copperhead slither right next to my boot. It didnt seemed too concerned with me so I froze for a second and let it pass.

@wilsocn Yes, you can walk in the fields (of course, no vehicles in the fields). Be sure to leave your car in one of the pulloffs and not in the road. I would also keep an eye out for snakes in the high grasses. Seems to me that would be a good place to run across one.

The Tipton house belonged to William "Fighting Billy" Tipton. Andrew Jackson used to come visit and race horses with Billy. William Tipton was my 6x great-uncle. Colonel Johnathan Tipton, William's father, was my 7x great-grandfather. Colonel Tipton's home is in Johnson City, TN and it is also a designated historic site. It was said that he was from Jamaica. He fought against the Franklinites, and John Sevier. He worked alongside George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Jefferson had said in a letter after death; “Colonel John Tipton was a man of strong conviction and loyal determination. He was endowed with a high order of intellect. He possessed a high sense of honor. He was a personification of loyalty to the State and Country.”

Are visitors allowed to leave the roads and walk freely in the cove (across fields, etc) to take photos?

In the Tipton house there are two mysterious holes in the wall on the back porch. I had to bother tow Rangers before I finally could solve the mystery. There was years ago a single party telephone line that linked all the cabins together that wanted it. This house was the last house on the line. Mystery solved!
