Pokemon Lunatic Crystal v1.6 - Gym Leader Brock

Published 2024-05-10
The next Kanto Leader is Pewter City's Brock. While Rock types are usually pretty one-note with the vast majority of them favoring the same types of physical moves and sharing the same weaknesses, this is not the case when it comes down to Brock.

Brock's team consists of Crobat, Blissey, Sudowoodo, Aerodactyl, Steelix and Tyranitar. Yes, only half of his team is Rock type, although Steelix is just an evolution of Onix, so this is a slightly different case, but even then he has two wild cards. That gives him two, speedy attackers, an excellent special and physical wall, as well as two powerful sweepers, with Tyranitar being the obvious stand-out. Not only that, he has plenty of both physical and special moves, making him a tricky opponent.

Crobat is the lead and its' main role is to be an annoyance with Confuse Ray and Focus Band which randomly prevents a KO. It also has Sludge Bomb, Razor Wind and Giga Drain, which are offensive options that punish players for leading with a Water, Ground, Grass or Fighting type. While Crobat's moveset is solid, is still has a glaring weakness to Steel types which can wall it pretty well, Magneton can very easily deal with Crobat for instance, barring terrible confusion luck.

Blissey is up next and it's Brock's answer to strong special attackers with Thunder Wave to paralyze, Seismic Toss and Thunderbolt as offensive options, as well as Softboiled to recover HP, which is further helped by held Leftovers. Blissey can be very difficult to deal for heavily special based teams, but it should go down to physical moves, a Fighting type can easily defeat it. Beware of the massive recoil damage if you're using Submission to KO it.

Sudowoodo is Brock's Curse sweeper. With a held Quick Claw it can set-up and go first, even with reduced sweep and with STAB Rock Slide, as well as Earthquake it can deal big damage even with just one boost. Sudowoodo had also received quite a makeover in Lunatic Crystal so it's not as easy to deal with as you might expect, for one it's now a Rock/Grass types which gives it a great defensive typing and gets rid of its' weaknesses to Ground, Water and Grass. Not only that, but it also recieved a massive Special Attack buff up to 70 and it does have STAB Solarbeam in its' arsenal. Thankfully it's still slow and weak to Fighting, Steel and Bug moves, but with good physical bulk and Curse it might be hard to KO it with Physical attacks, Ice Beam is the ideal solution vs Sudowoodo.

Aerodactyl is just as fast as Crobat, but it's a much deadlier offensive threat, with 105 Attack, STAB Rock Slide and Sky Attack (which is boosted by a held Sharp Beak), as well as Earthquake. Not only that, but it also has Swagger to confuse your Pokemon. With such high stats and great coverage, it's very difficult to tank it. The best choice would either be a dedicated physical wall like Steelix that can easily take an Earthquake or Electrode which can outspeed and nail it with Thunderbolt or Thunder. Slowbro can also take a physical move and OHKO with Hydro Pump in return. If you don't have a Pokemon that outspeeds or can take a crit from it, you can very easily get swept by Aerodactyl, especially if your team is tired.

Steelix is next and its' main role is to be a Toxic staller, with Toxic and Protect, as well as Leftovers to recover HP. It also has a STAB combination of Iron Tail and Earthquake, with Earthquake being the answer to most Steel types. If your Special Attackers have already fainted then Steelix might be tricky to KO, but you should be able to play around it. Any strong Fire or Water type can exploit Steelix's lack of Special Bulk and a Pokemon like Skarmory can easily wall Steelix's entire set. Still, getting poisoned can be very annoying, so try and KO it before it can get off a Toxic.

Tyranitar is Brock's Ace. As a Pseudo Legendary it has incredible stats in all areas, aside from speed and it has a very potent mixed set consisting of Earthquake, Rock Slide, Thunderbolt and Ice Beam. STAB Rock Slide coming from Tyranitar's massive Attack will hurt a lot, Earthquake is a good physical coverage move and Thunderbolt, as well as Ice Beam are there to threaten Water, Grass and Ground types, especially with Tyranitar having 95 Special Attack. Not only that, but it's also holding a Quick Claw which can let it move first. Tyranitar is a terryfing foe to deal with, but it does have a glaring 4x weakness to Fighting moves so that is the answer here, especially as Fighting types resist Rock Slide.
