American Reacts to Rule Britannia - Last Night of the Proms 2009

Published 2022-09-21
In this video I react to Rule Britannia - Last Night of the Proms and it was awesome! I had no idea what to expect. At first it started out as opera with a bit of classical, but then the crowd got into it and it became one of the most amazing patriotic songs I could imagine.

I absolutely loved seeing the British people come together and celebrate their nation. Flags flying, people smiling and singing Rule Britannia. A great song and excellent performance.

Thanks for watching. If you enjoyed this reaction please give this video a thumbs up, share your thoughts in the comments and click the subscribe button to follow my journey to learn about my British ancestry.

The original lyrics are:
When Britain first, at Heaven's command
Arose from out the azure main;
This was the charter of the land,
And guardian angels sang this strain:
"Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
"Britons never will be slaves."

The nations, not so blest as thee,
Must, in their turns, to tyrants fall;
While thou shalt flourish great and free,
The dread and envy of them all.
"Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
"Britons never will be slaves."

Still more majestic shalt thou rise,
More dreadful, from each foreign stroke;
As the loud blast that tears the skies,
Serves but to root thy native oak.
"Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
"Britons never will be slaves."

Thee haughty tyrants ne'er shall tame:
All their attempts to bend thee down,
Will but arouse thy generous flame;
But work their woe, and thy renown.
"Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
"Britons never will be slaves."

To thee belongs the rural reign;
Thy cities shall with commerce shine:
All thine shall be the subject main,
And every shore it circles thine.
"Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
"Britons never will be slaves."

The Muses, still with freedom found,
Shall to thy happy coast repair;
Blest Isle! With matchless beauty crown'd,
And manly hearts to guard the fair.
"Rule, Britannia! rule the waves:
"Britons never will be slaves."

  • No other country can compare to the UK. Love from Australia 🇦🇺
  • I can't watch this without getting goosebumps. I am Canadian so you can imagine my national pride extends throughout the entire Commonwealth! 🇨🇦🇬🇧

    The British always like to add some humour to practically everything.
  • The largest music festival in the world, two months continuous of The Proms. Mostly classical, but also jazz, music from musicals etc. Performers and conductors from all over the world. The UK is a small country but packs a big punch in many fields. The song was written to celebrate the Royal Navy for ending the Barbary slave trade. That trade involved North Africans kidnapping and enslaving Europeans (including many Brits) who were sold at slave markets in North Africa, many to owners across the Ottoman Empire.

    “The night at the proms” is a very Traditional yearly event, I always singalong. “The last night at the proms” is always fun.

    The proms are just Britain at its best, we're very patriotic and the last night of the proms is just iconic. You have the proms from the royal Albert Hall but simultaneously its from Hyde Park, Cardiff, Northern Ireland and Scotland. 🇬🇧, never been to the Albert Hall but have been to Hyde Park where the Albert Hall is projected onto large screens as well as performers on the stage at Hyde Park. It's epic 💖

    I wish we sang Rule Britannia throughout the UK every year!

    As a Canadian, this fills me with pride to be part of the Commonwealth and being 2nd generation Canadian of Welsh and English heritage. The Proms are part of my life and having lived in England for 34 years, it is even more significant. It glorifies the Royal Navy's contribution to our history and is part of our annual history
  • I'm a supporter of Glasgow Rangers (Scottish) and every home game we sing this and God Save The King I absolutely LOVE being British and I'm incredibly proud of my nation. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧❤🤍💙🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

    Being British this brings a lump to my throat but my chest swells with pride .
  • The last night isn't opera it's the UK enjoying music - it is appreciated by all classes - worth seeing the complete show - it's televised each year
  • I am in awe of the British anthems. Rule Britannia is an awesome piece of music. The opera singer doing that particular is famous over there in the UK. Every summer at the Royal Albert Hall, they have a series of shows and performances over the summer and they are called the "Proms". On the last night of the Proms for the summer, they pull out all of stops and that performance that you watched was the last night of the Proms for that particular summer. The Hall was packed with thousands of people as was Hyde Park which is right across the road from the hall. Glad to hear that you enjoyed it. Don Hooper Ocala, Florida.

    It's such a favourite event of the year. People come from around the world, including the states, to sing our songs and wave their countries flag on the last night of the proms. It's like a party. I like to watch on TV and see just how may flags I recognise. In addition to the big screens put up around the UK for people to watch in the open air, the summer season of concerts are also broadcast on TV and radio, nationally, by the BBC.
  • You really need to show the Green Day crowd singing Bohemian Rhapsody live in Hyde Park 2017, it will knock you out. We Brits know how to stir your hearts.
  • @jillosler9353
    The Last Night is the ending of weeks of concerts at the Royal Albert Hall which always culminates in a patriotic sing-along; Rule Brittania, Land of Hope and Glory, Jerusalem etc. The opera singer this particular year decided to join in the fun and dress as a Naval Commander. The Last Night is so popular that large screens are placed around the country so people not lucky enough to be in the Hall can still join in.
  • The last night is in two parts. The first part is of a more serious nature, then around 9pm, it goes traditional with Rule Britannia, Sea Shanty’s, Land of hope and glory, Jerusalem and more. There are also live concerts in Hyde Park, London and also in Scotland, Wales and Northern Island.
