I never heard of Canadian military over a long life yet know of many others that have world fame

Having non residents join the military is not really an issue as long as they are background checked. Americans joined Canadian Armed forces during WW1 while the US was remaining neutral. They also joined UK forces and French forces, I don't see the issue at all. The US allows, or did at one point, foreign citizens to join the military and at the end of their contract would be awarded green cards and eventual citizenship for their faithful service.
