After Sony's falling out with Nintendo and creating PlayStation as its own platform, Sony rode success to the very top. The PS1 and PS2 saw landslide victories against their competitors, making PlayStation the dominant brand in games. For Sony Computer Entertainment President & CEO Ken Kutaragi, this meant PS3 had to go all out. Creating the powerful, yet difficult to master Cell Processor, and cramming an enormous amount of tech into the PS3. But a high price tag, and lack of quality games caused Sony to fall from grace. What really happened? This is the story of Ken Kutaragi's final console, the PlayStation 3.

The best thing about the PS3 is it taught Sony a ton about what not to do with a console. Funny though that in the end, the console still worked out for them.

Documentaries on the PS3; that's how you know you're old
  • @fatpizza7810
I loved how the original PS3 font was the same as the Spider-Man trilogy (coincidently both made by Sony).

What a time in gaming, PS3 and Xbox 360, for someone who lived through all the game cycles, I say this was the Golden age of gaming!

Still can't believe that this old machine can run the last of us, gta V & uncharted series
  • I remember getting my PS3 day one and actually just looking at it for about 10 minutes before turning it on. An Absolute beast of a console and when you think about it and total value for money. You could play Blu Ray , CD , DVD , PS1 , PS2 and PS3 👍

This was one of the best console redemption arcs ever.

Despite the problems (like price and the yellow light of death), this was the console for which I had the most games. And I still love it’s interface to this day. It truly was the first all-in-one entertainment system, allowing video games, MP4 & MP3 playback, and it was my first Blu-ray player. I unfortunately had to junk my original one because the yellow light of death couldn’t be overcome but still, lots of great memories.

"Did you win?" Sony: Yes." "What did it cost?" Sony:"Everything"

I still use my PS3. It really was way ahead of its time.

My favorite Playstation so far. You can feel that it has been made with a lot of pretentiousness (in a good way) and you can feel it from the symphonic orchestra startup, the interface, it's execution to it's extra bass sound.

I consider 2006 to 2009 as the PS3's Dark Age, it was starting in 2010 when the PS3 Slim model was just recently released and following the launch of critically acclaimed games like Heavy Rain, God of War III and Grand Turismo 5 , not to mention the successful launch of the PlayStation Move, this was when the future started to look bright for Sony once again.

Sony: "It can be used for other stuff" Also Sony: Literally kills off other OS
  • @Ayixlia
The PS3 is the Super Sayian 3 of all the systems Powerful, sleek, lots of untapped potential yet no one could or can master it not even Sony or Goku.

Ryan has been the go to source for the PlayStation community on YouTube for years and these documentary specials are just brilliant. Thanks brother for the effort & excellent content. The PS3 brought me back to gaming and is my favorite console. I always have gotten into new generations later in the life cycles i.e. I bought a PS1 in 1996, a PS2 in 2004 right after San Andreas came out and didn't get a PS3 until 2012. First off I go in phases with gaming from being excited and all in to not playing for months. What has happened with getting the new gens later in their life cycles is that when I do get them it's usually after the Slim hardware revision, so the hardware has been debugged and streamlined. As for software, there's a huge amount of AAA games that are now on sale and very cheap on the used market. By getting a PS3 shortly before the PS4 I got to experience all of the prior hits at lnd Last Of Us. In addition to a huge backlog and going in & out of gaming I just got a PS4 Pro last year. Just like with the PS3 I've enjoyed great deals on games that were just $60 a few years ago (just bought Assassin's Creed Odyssey for like $12 or something). I have had a blast with the PS4 Pro, but my PS3 Slim is still hooked up on my gaming 4K TV and is still fired up occasionally. This novella is to give kudos to Ryan but also , by giving my history with PlayStation, give my $0.02 on the upcoming PS5 launch. Like the other Playstation releases I am waiting on getting a PS5. Availability is probably forcing that even if I wanted to I couldn't get one, but my trepidation is down to the fact that Sony launch hardware (like all companies hardware for that matter) has had issues. Seeing that the SSD is married to the motherboard really concerned me and I would wager that in 2-3 years the Slim version will make the main SSD removable just like the extended storage drive option. Plus we are really in the depths of diminishing returns now. This isn't a leap like Atari 2600 to NES or even PS3 to PS4 (which was appreciable but not gobsmacking). The PS5 will perform better as far as frame rates and the addition of ray tracing and other graphical fidelity improvements but sitting 6-8 feet away I'd love to see what the A-B blind test reveals for CyberPunk on PS4 and PS5. I sincerely believe most gamers would have trouble distinguishing between the two versions. Patience friends.
  • "What am I thankful for?" Finding this incredible channel! I was scrolling through YouTube for an achievement guide for a game and I scrolled across this page. I honestly have no idea as too why this account doesn't have over 1 MILLION SUBS. Anyway, I love the content and keep doing what you're doing! 👍
  • @RomeGoLARGE
I will forever love my PS3s It was and still is a bad ass system. Especially the original 60GB. It's the Lamborghini of gaming consoles.
  • What I find interesting about the fact that the PS3 font is the same as the original Spider-Man trilogy, is the parallel between the two. The first one was very good, the second was even better, but the third one, while not bad, didn't have the same success as the first two, both the Playstation and the Spiderman movies.

I am genuinely upset with myself for not having come across this channel (and especially these video game history docs) sooner! The level of detail, editing, narrative, technical explanations, and analysis is truly impressive. Yours is one of those rare channels that are such high quality that I actually feel a bit guilty that I’m not paying for this content. I don’t think I’ve ever subscribed faster
