Ok so in the Barbie movies, it's Barbie AS (name). This is because in Barbie lore, Barbie is an actor. She stars in all of these movies, aside from a Fairy Secret and Fashion Fairytale, and the shows. These focus on her as an actor, but aside from that, she's just playing a role.

I love how much you misinterpreted that first song. Barbie(pink dress) is in an arranged marriage with a man she’s never met who’s a king of a different kingdom because of the kingdom’s poverty. Blue dress is a victim of the poverty and is “in debt” to the woman she works for. Both of them are forced to do things they don’t want to because of poverty and their entire lives are controlled by someone else.
  • “Do you want context?” “No thanks!” Proceeds to criticize poetic scene without context To clarify Mathew: In the song “Girl like You” the Princess and the Pauper are bonding over the validation of Trauma. While Erika(Pauper) is an indentured servant and Annalise is a Princess in an economically arranged Marriage, they both have the same valid feeling of feeling trapped and helpless in their life while also feeling a responsibility to complete the role the world has assigned them. And despite their situations are totally different, their feelings and emotions are both valid. It’s a story told mostly through dialogue alone, because 2004 Barbie Movies didn’t have a super large animation budget to create flashy action or affects—which is why you’ll see mostly animal sidekicks performing said role in the early movies—and had to tell their story through the character interactions alone. You should totally watch the full movie—and especially listen to the dialogue—because it’s truely a work of art for its time

Princess and the Pauper actually has a cute little fandom that gush over how adorable these two are and they have pointed out that the pauper was downplaying her situation and she was the one initiating the entire "I'm just like you" chorus to not make the princess feel bad for her. They said there was no way making a gown was as easy as she described it as in the song compared to how it would be done realistically, and also bc technically she wouldn't be having such a hard time if it was that easy. Also, she didn't mention any financial problems to the princess.

How is it possible to listen to Princess and the Pauper songs without going over How To Be A Princess? Matt, you know you gotta make another video with that one included now right? ;)
  • @mikaylacooney
Okay more Barbie songs: Free (Princess and the Pauper) To Be a Princess (Princess and the Pauper) If You Love Me For Me (Princess and the Pauper) Connected (Diamond Castle) Two Voices (Diamond Castle) I'm a little biased toward these movies but the songs are really good

"Do you want to know the context?" "No." "Why is this blah blah blah?" "WATCH THE MOVIE!" YOU'RE SPEAKING FOR ALL OF US! THANK YOU!!
  • I mean, the girl in the blue dress in the first song is the one who insisted they were alike. The princess was like, “you sure about that? Because I definitely just said I get my breakfast on a silver tray and you definitely just said you have fetch your own eggs from a mile away
” It’s actually really sweet and generous-hearted of Erika (blue dress) to find common ground with Anneliese (pink dress) instead of being envious or bitter.
  • “What royal duties dose a princesses have?” “Watch the movie” 😂😂😂😂😂

I think it says a lot that the pauper in the princess in the pauper was the one to first say that they were similar. It would sound high handed starting from the princess, however from the pauper it’s actually quite daring and empowering. In another story if a peasant girl dared to say that she was no different than the princess it would probably kill her. They are nearly identical and have similar personalities and are able to empathize with the common reality of being born into responsibilities. The message I am a girl like you is also way better than a I’m not other girls mindset.

"does she work in a sweat shop??" YES, SHE DOES! she's making dresses to pay off her parents' debt!!
  • The fact none of the Diamond Castle songs are here is a crime, that whole soundtrack slaps My personal favorite is "We're gonna find it", but as i said, the entire thing is amazing
  • Fun Fact! The voice actress for Barbie also does Starlight Glimmer from My Little Pony!
  • If you like these you would definitely love monster high songs they’re all so good
  • @perrilewis180
Princess and The Pauper is a proper musical that you need to listen to the entire soundtrack of get it. The song 'Free' sets up the entire premise. They are both trapped in different ways.
  • You ABSOLUTELY NEED to listen to Barbie as the Island Princess. All of the songs are so good! Especially Her On My Island and I Need To Know
  • @GalaxC13
I can't stop watching the part where you say "uh the queen" at the same time. That's hysterical 😂
  • Getting ready for Mathew to over analyze every line of these songs
  • Not sure if someone has already mentioned this, but the actor giving that absolutely insane villain performance is actually Martin Short. He brought his all to that role, absolutely iconic
