Our global mental health crisis is growing at an exponential rate, with over half a billion people suffering from depression and anxiety; it’s time we rethink our understanding of the underlying root causes of mental health challenges.

From treating thousands of patients, I’ve learned that depression is not in your head. It’s in your body. More specifically, your gut. When your gut is unhealthy and inflamed, your brain is unhealthy and inflamed. In Functional Medicine, we know that the gut and the brain are intimately connected and that the health of one directly influences the health of the other.
In today’s Health Bites episode, we’re diving into the gut-brain connection and sharing Functional Medicine tools to support your gut health and, as a result, your mood and mental health.

In this episode, I discuss:
Our global mental health crisis (2:45)
The gut-brain connection (4:18)
The story of Marks's broken brain (5:15)
Features of the gut-brain axis (8:57)
Gut hormones that send signals to your brain (10:06)
Role of the gut microbiota in mood and mental health (12:24)
How stress negatively impacts our gut microbiome (20:14)
The link between leaky gut and poor mental health (21:41)
The Functional Medicine approach to fixing the gut (25:56)
The 5R Program for fixing your gut health (30:09)

  • " Dont listen to the doctor, listen to your body. Your body's the smartest doctor in the room." Wonderful quote :)
  • @ethereal369
I wish more people were aware of the intrinsic connection between mind, body, spirit. Imbalance in one area deeply affects the rest.
  • Speaking fast is a sign of intelligence. I love this man, I love his character especially when he does his little laugh while speaking. His bedside manor must be wonderful!!!!!
  • AMAZING! I got so sick and dr just told me i had depression and anxiety! And i knew whit out knowing all this that the problem was in my gut ! ❤❤❤
  • Thank you Dr Hyman for your invaluable help to us all. I like delivery myself, but can i offer some help to anyone who thinks too fast ~ There are some dots top right and you can access settings and reduce speed by a quarter or even a half, you can even slow it down to a quarter speed if you want. I like it the way he does it myself. He’s such a good man giving us all this help and information for free. God bless him
  • Saw you on a podcast the other day and you've convinced me to change my life around. I will be ditching all processed foods and anything that comes in a package. Dairy as well. Healthy lean meats, proteins, vegetables will be my new lifestyle. Vitamins too. Lots of water and fasting 100%
  • Brilliant but Too much, and way Too fast for mere mortals like Fred Flintstone here. Retired senior Marine Officer with grad work in education and having directed a large medical project, directly participated in surgeries and 6x cancer, 37 ortho procedures and surgeries; and spent five (5) years on VA Advisory Board, this marvelous presentation should be done slowly in either 2-3 parts. Period. Thank you

This is really good, just hope it's simplified, so it's easier to grasp.
  • @mikerothe3700
Don't miss parasites causing a lot of issues also. Mental and physical
  • I love your information! Makes so much sense. I did have to rewind and look at the transcript because you do talk too fast for me to grasp some of the information!
  • @amelia2656
Wow! That was some high speed presentation. Luckily I figured out how to follow the transcript so I could understand most of what was being said.

Huge issue in the modern day world, if you’re ill and feeling bad very very clearly it impacts your mood and behaviours. The largest body of research into the microbiome is being conducted by Tim spectre with Zoe. It seems v clear our modern diet designed by food and pharmacy research is killing us.
  • @sancorn8032
What a coincidence. I have been taking Enterogermina probiotics for the last two days for stomach pain, chest pain when swallowing and "nervous stomach". I feel like a different person! The stress is almost zero and my stomach is back to normal.
  • I have known this for 2 years, when my stomach was totally destroyed and I afterwards got very very depressed. It is SO difficult to convince the doctor about this connection unfortunately. Which antifungal remedy will you recommend?
  • @sgtaneja
Fasting & right diet done smartly is the holy grail to many of these issues.
  • The pancreas is always ignored but it plays a big part in gut health. When it comes to natural unprocessed foods and inflammation, its really about digestion. Gluten is not bad, but when you cannot digest the gluten protein, then it becomes a problem.
