Why UFO Religions Are On The Rise

The idea of alien life, friendly or hostile, has inspired great works of science fiction. But also a number of religious movements. Religions like Raëlism, which state that God was an alien astronaut who cloned the first humans. Or Scientology, whose inner workings are subject to much secrecy and scrutiny. Then there are the cults like the infamous Heaven's Gate...

In this video, I want to investigate these so-called UFO religions. Where did they come from? What are their beliefs? And what do they teach us about how religions form and spread? Welcome to the faith of the future. Where spirituality and sci-fi collide.

Although they might sound a bit wacky, these UFO religions have become a genuine topic of academic study. In some ways, they aren’t so different to the mainstream faiths. Both emerge when one person or group claims to have obtained secret knowledge from Heaven. These UFO religions can be seen as a modern iteration of all this. Substituting gods and prophets with aliens and contactees.

Note: Remember, UFO means "Unidentified Flying Object". It could be anything! In modern parlance, however, it is often used to refer to aliens. just to avoid any confusion.

I had great fun making this, and in my excitement spoke far too close to the mic during my voiceover. Hence the many pops. Whoops! Will remember this for next time.

Thank you all for 554k Subscribers!

I watch hochalaga's videos with my religious grandmother and she hates it but listens to every word he says and occasionally brings out the bible to fact check him. It's a really heartwarming bonding session.

I think the most interesting thing in religious studies is when you see the commonalities between each religion even before mass communication
  • Heavens Gate didn’t completely disband. They actually still have a website where you can email members. They claim they were “let behind to complete tasks and answer questions”
  • I like how Carl Sagan approach this in his book Demon haunted world, in one part of his book he mentions that someone was sending him letters about the dude being an alien, he replied asking math/physics problems that could have been solved already by an advance civilization. He never got another letter again.

I love how respectfully and genuinely curiously approach these subjects no matter how ridiculous they may seem. It's quite the refreshing take just talking about the topic at hand without bashing on other people like so many other youtubers do when they talk about these kinds of things.

"Nordic aliens" That is just so fucking absurd to me, why the hell would aliens have attributes of people from a region on earth?
  • @nem3732
What if the real aliens were the friends we made along the way.

Nice, I was just in the mood to watch one of your videos.
  • Honorable mention: Mormonism. While they don’t actively teach it today, the founders taught that God and Jesus lived on a planet by a star named Kolob and that during the apocalypse (or afterwards?), planet Earth would travel through space until it reached God’s throne near Kolob (or something like that). They even have a hymn called “If You Could Hie to Kolob.” I liked this video but would’ve enjoyed if you went into a little more depth with each religion. Maybe in a future video you could do that or make a separate video for each religion. Thanks for your work!

I've recently watched videos about 'Unicult', led by a woman named 'Unicole', who claims to be an 'alien in a human body'. This individual has a significant following online. This person consider their actions/behaviours to be a religion. It is fascinating to me just what people will believe in.

And yet again, the internet is enlightened by this gentleman's content and unmatched prosody. Thank you for yet another great video, H.

Watching current and past events unfold you gotta wonder how far off HG really was, and how truly wild some of these beliefs are when compared to both ancient and modern ideologies of similar kinds.

I remembered that in primary school a classmate told me that I should not believe in aliens, because God exists. My reaction was, what does it have to do with anything? lol The universe is supposed to be infinite and God omnipotent. She didn't like my answer haha. Great video as always, and a super interesting topic. Hopefully you can expand it in the future! On a side note, I always forget to tell you that I love your voice ❤️
  • I love your content! It's really nice to see them evolution of religion and how it adapts to modern thought.

Heaven's Gate actually never disbanded, albeit it stopped accepting new members, seeing as it is already too late for the rest of us in their eyes now. Two remaining members stayed behind, and they continue to maintain the website through the TELAH (The Evolutionary Level Above Human) Foundation.

The ship from Japan is theorised to be an exiled Russian royal or noble, as that’s how people were exiled at the time.
  • I'm surprised there are only a handful of these "UFO Religions" mentioned in hochelaga's video. I'm not sure this qualifies as a UFO religion but there is this "channel" named Daryl Anka who claims to channel his future self. A being he calls Bashar (who is a hybrid E.T. living on another planet/dimension/and time.) He has a huge following. I'm also surprised Steven Greer (founder of CSETI) wasn't mentioned. Him and his team of UFologists go out and use Hindu mantras and other meditations in order to "summon UFO's" (at least that's what appears to be happening in his documentary.)

9:51 You forgot to say: having been told that their souls will ascend onto the spaceship.
  • @noctuaa8244
Fun fact: the cave paintings at 1:04 depict rain spirits from the beliefs of the indigenous people living in the area (Australia I think)

I would love a buddhism video someday! I really enjoy all your productions <3
