To answer your question, Akira Toriyama (the creator) actually didn't plan out a lot of Dragon Ball Z, while writing the manga he was known for making up a lot of the plot as he went. Even Goku being a Saiyan wasn't originally planned out. Also Dragon Ball Z is actually a rebranded name that was given for the second half of the anime adaptation, in the manga the entire series is just called Dragon Ball.

5:26 In the Japanese version Pilaf is introduced as Demon King PIlaf, showing he tried to rip off Piccolo's gimmick for himself. Also in the Japanese version at the end of episode 150 (Which you left out) The Turtle Hermit says he wrote that stuff while he was drunk. Where as in the FUNimation dub he says he made it up to impress some girl.

For the "How big is this Earthquake?" Question: From Magnitude 5.0 on, it's becoming dangerous for bigger structures like houses. My gues for the vulcanic eruption would be a 7 - 8 on the Richter scale

this episode is loosly based on the Journey to the West story, when Sun Wukong used a magical fan to stop a volcano in the Flaming Mountains. in dragon ball the fan is called the Bansho fan. in the story its called "Banana Leaf" fan because its made of banana leaves.' there are more similarities in this episode. the first season of dragon ball is loosely based on that story.

I think everyone, and i mean everyone needs to watch Og dragon ball. This details is something people never mentions about the show, such as goku fighting illusions in this ep. And i love how the show of db already had dbz as a new opening since the manga of dbz was already going. In overall db was amazing, 9/10 show. Good story, characters, antagonists, fights, themes, etc
