  • I am so, so confused by this, so I'm just going to assume it was supposed to be that way, and that I'm not an idiot.

This is probably my favorite Dear Hank and John bit of all time. I was on a run when I listened to it the first time, and I had to stop running for a few minutes while I laughed semi-hysterically and probably made my neighbors really concerned.

Thanks to the educational video club at RIT for this amazing animation! Search “Green Brothers Bucket Problem” to see their full explanation!

Ok this made me go listen to the whole dear hank and John ep and then watch the video this animatic is from. If I’m understanding the question correctly, the question is, if you stand on one end of the scale and put your arm into a bucket of water on the other end of the scale, how does the scale move? I think the linked video does a good job of explaining one mechanism that happens (the weight of the bucket increases when you put your hand in, even if your hand is suspended), but there is a second, secret mechanism they didn’t address, which is that your center of mass changes when you reach your hand over to the bucket. On the dear hank and John ep, they get to the conclusion that the bucket must get heavier, but john expresses confusion as to how your end gets lighter. As you reach into the bucket, your center of mass shifts closer to the vertex of the scale, thus making your side “lighter”. (It’s also helpful to remember that “weight” actually a force measurement, not a measure of mass)

I don't Marijuana, but I feel like that is the minimum requirement to understand this video.
  • When your science has the energy of a Game Grumps side story 😂
  • Trying to understand what they're talking about is making me sour. E: Here are two other fresh sqeezed jokes; What do you call a Lemon Man on steroids? Juiced. Why did the Lemon Man wear a condom? To protect him from LemonAIDS
  • @emmyabroad
This has SUCH McElroy Brothers/MBMBAM energy
  • @mickeymute334
Nothing will describe the sheer levels of serotonin I get hearing this man happily exclaim "MOVIES!"
  • Oh yeah, I also start answering fundamentally difficult big-scale questions with “now imagine this building had an arm…” 😂
  • The fact that no drugs were involved in the making of this video is absolutely astonishing
  • @jackmellen
Did we ever get a well-explained answer to this? Because I don't understand it yet.
  • Bro I’m from RIT and I’m so fricking excited to see you!!! I hope we can take a picture!!!
  • @asmakitto
One of the episodes that lived in my brain rent free for mooooonths 😂
  • Silly me, here I thought Hank and John were going to discuss the bucket song, you know "There's a hole in my bucket, Dear Liza, Dear Liza". Just maybe, I thought they were going to discuss the merits of the steps Dear Henry had to take in order to fetch a bucket of water. I never realized that the bucket might have a lemon in it, much less a lemon person. What a head trip! I guess that's why I love Hank and John Green, so much, even though my bucket may have a hole in it that, thankfully isn't large enough that the lemon, or lemon person person won't fall out.

Oh wow, can we please get the best bits of all the Dear Hank and Johns animated? This is amazing.
