Although this was cool, in the books the witch king supercharged Grond with sorcery. There was a bit more open magic in the books

SO what happened to GROND? It breaches the gate then mysteriously its gone from the battlefield after dragging the thing up there.

Those beasts make me think of a cross between that knife-head monster from the Gamera movies and one of the monsters from the Peter Cushing movie "At the Earth's Core."

Man, I only wish they hadn't cut the witch king chanting spells to destroy the gate; it would only raise the stakes and both make it patently clear not only how strong the gate was, but how powerful the witch king's magic was at that point in time without ruining his standoff with Gandalf. Still, epic scene.
