The jab is everything, really. It's not the most powerful punch, but on the other hand it's a range finder and that is crucial in a striking match.

Man, I LOVE your videos. You really know what you're talking about. I've been a boxer for 6, almost 7 years now and in my free time I thumb through your vids just to cherry pick on some of your advice. The only thing I wanted to bring up was something you said at the end of mistake 2 when you mentioned those guys who complain of elbow pain from throwing jabs. I was expecting you to bring it up but it was overlooked. One of the most common causes of elbow pain from throwing jabs is not utilizing the corkscrew effect when throwing them. Not only does it exert more power when throwing your jab or right cross, but it also eliminates any snap on your elbow when it's thrown. Likewise, when you use the corkscrew effect it also causes your shoulder to rotate upward, guarding your chin and leaving you less exposed to a counter strike if they telegraph the jab, circle right (or left if you're a southpaw) where your chin would be exposed otherwise. Other than that little interjection, I have NOTHING negative to say about what you do here on youtube. You're a fantastic boxer and martial artist all around. Keep up the great work man!

Shane your home gym actually looks great, i'm kinda jelous
  • Hey, Shane. Elbow pain with the jab is real. I'm a tall dude with long-ass arms so I was struggling with that a lot. What I found is when you rotate your wrist during the jab so your thumb points down towards the floor then the joints align and your shoulder comes naturally upwards to the side of your face, so you don't eat a hook. The jab becomes powerful and stable, no pain. Same goes for the cross. Thanks for the video.

Dude, your ability to provide high quality instructional videos with few verbal errors in a single take is very impressive.
  • Great pointers. The elbow pain is ridiculous because I've been overextending my jab.

Everything you said is gold! The jab should be the most mastered and used technique in any combat sport that involves striking!!!
