I like how Megatron and Optimus were on equal footing in this show but the plot demands when one of them lose.

The reason megatron loses is due to his pride. He always assumes he's going to win and underestimates his opponents, usually because before optimus, he probably had never lost

If you ask me strength was always equal between Optimus and Megatron. They usually just work on their timing of surprise attack for the best advantage of a strong hit. Optimus just needed one moment just to tear off Megatron’s arm, to punch Megatron in the sky, etc and Megatron did the same to Optimus when he was surprised. It wasn’t always the “surprise attacks” that made the best hits but it shows that Optimus always holds back and their combat skills and training are basically equal.
