Synology finally brought files on demand in their latest version of Synology Drive application. I wanted to test the feature and find out whether it works in a similar way to OneDrive. To my surprise, it acts the exact same way! But Synology has a massive advantage - the storage can be much larger, you can have OneDrive included in it and fetching of files doesn't depend on your internet.

hi juraj, can i used this method for my 3TB of data?
  • Hi, clearly I think that you didn't try Synology Drive IRL conditions, you probably did a quick and dirty test like all other pseudo-testers do :( As soon as you have more than a few GB, it became unreliable because of the never-ending 'three-way-merge' operation (some kind of initial sync). The problem is that Synology Drive is far too slow to deal with an important amount of DATA. In my case, I have around 500GB of data (ie. 300k files, 30k folders) that I wanted to sync using "Files on demand", it's been a month since I started this operation on a single PC and it's still not finished...I've opened a ticket on syno support, 30 messages later they still don't offer any solution. I finally moved to Onedrive and 5 days later, everything works perfectly on all the PCs (15 users). Previously, we have been using Dropbox which was also working perfectly. So, you're absolutely wrong when writing that it acts the same way, maybe it's ok for home users but it is certainly not a solution for small business.
