As with most expansion teams, the Raptors struggled in their early years, but after the acquisition of Vince Carter through a draft-day trade in 1998, the franchise set league-attendance records and made the NBA playoffs in 2000, 2001, and 2002.

Carter was instrumental in leading the team to their first playoff series win in 2001, where they advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals. During the 2002–03 and 2003–04 seasons, they failed to make significant progress, and Carter was traded in 2004 to the New Jersey Nets.

    Drop your NBA Timeline suggestions!
  • If the Raptors didn’t swap Jamison for Vince Carter, basketball in Canada will not be as popular as we know today.
  • @poonking3628
Imagine how good that team could’ve been if they were just patient and let VC, McGrady, Billups, and Camby develop together as a core.
  • @Complacent21
Crazy on how Vince Carter opened the door for so many Canadian NBA players you can say he was the best dunker of all time and one of the most influential players of all time
  • Man i realize all those trades the raptors did had huge roles to the other teams to blazers getting stoudamire, knicks getting camby, orlando getting tracy, nuggets getting billups(which helped detroit later), and kings getting christie. Imagine they stayed with this core if only those off court drama never happened and the situation might have been different.
  • Damn Man I ain’t even realize IT was even an executive in general or even apart of the raptors. Thanks for teaching a fun fact 😎
  • @Doomsday824
Thanks for this Vince Carter Related! vc is one of my favorite player! Insane Talent! Thanks Jay Warvz!
  • The fact that all this happened in only a few years shows how wild the Nba is and always has been
  • If you compare the Raptors now to what it was then, you can see the difference. VC has some blame but the ownership and front office was horrible. Don’t forget, the Leafs sucked back then as well. I hope Vince gets his jersey retired because if it wasn’t for him, Canada wouldn’t have a basketball ball team.
  • Vince Carter’s on my favorite players of all time, such a shame he never won a ring
  • @kendochelo
Rise and fall of the Vancouver Grizzlies, and 90’s bulls era!
