In this episode of cycling "Upgrades" we're visiting the one and only Mt. Tamalpais in Mill Valley, California. The road we're riding up to the East Peak is called Old Rail Road Grade. It got its name from a time when tourists used to ride a steam train up to the summit to take in the views. Sadly, the steam train is no longer, but now it's one of the most enjoyable gravel road climbs in the area. Join us as we cycle up this big ol' mountain.

  • I just love how gentle and gracious the two of you are. Lovely mellow souls.
  • As Eddy Merckx said, "don't buy upgrades, ride up grades". Nice relaxing video.
  • Sat next to Gary Fisher on a flight to Germany once. We talked about bikes for 2 hours. Super nice guy. Never knew he was a Cat 1 roadie back in his prime before being part of the original founders of mountain biking. Also lived next to the offices of Ritchey components in San Carlos. So many founders of America’s cycling come from the Bay Area.

Sending love from Oxford, England to you and Ms Cools. Stay safe in these troubling times and looking forward to seeing more of your adventures in the months to come.
  • Another dreamy awesome production! Thanks for bringing a piece of heaven to the world. Love you guys 😊

I’ve been binge watching your videos. They’re great comfort in those difficult times. The government does not allow me to ride my bike. Take care of yourself and Cools.

Another from England here. Although the scenery is great in your videos, the bikes are the stars for me. Steel frames, downtube shifters, drops and big smooth tyres on one bike is rare over here and I'm always inspired to convert one of my steel frames to a UK equivalent of your bikes. Love the inspiration Mr Wildeberry.
  • Henry, Thank you for this pre- COVID-19 shelter-in-place video. This has been a wild week, so amazing how fast our lives can be altered. Video’s like this will help us all, while we are hunkered-down, to remember we will get through these challenging times ! Stay healthy, and part of that both physically and mentally is getting out and riding your bike !!!

Here in England we are just a stone's throw from being in full Lock Down!, so if you guys can still get out and ride please keep em coming!!. Love from England xx
  • @joosttx
Love it. You guys are going to have to ride a dawn patrol up railroad grade once this we get covid19 under control. Nothing more beautiful than riding up RRG and catching the sunrise on the top of Mt Tam. Thank you for the video.

Gary Fisher is a pretty swell fella. 2 years ago I had to fly halfway around the world to see my mom who was in hospice care. It was a pretty tense trip to say the least. My final connection was at O'Hare in Chicago. As I was running from the international terminal to my domestic connection through the underground looooooong moving sidewalks I spotted this fella up ahead with a pinstripe suit and hat and Timbuk2 bag. Immediately I knew it was Gary. I had very little time to get my connecting flight, but as I ran past him, I said "Gary!" Then I slowed down, went back, and asked for a selfie. He happily obliged. After we got the photo I thanked him, and wildly mumbled something about being afraid I'd miss my connection. Gary said something like "No way man, you've got this." And I made it with seconds to spare. He has no idea about the inner tension I had on that trip, or what my story was, but the genuine kindness he showed in the 90 seconds we interacted made my stressful trip somehow cooler or more tolerable. We should all be a bit more like Gary.

You also got me on the upgrades.😉 But I would've watched it anyways. Stay safe guys and keep on pedaling! 💪

Funny enough, my first Mt bike was also a Specialized, an entry level stumpjumper in 1989? I hadn’t been riding bikes since about age 16 in the south of France where i grew up and upon moving to SF a friend introduced me to Mt Biking, that was it! I was hooked and have been ever since. Yes, you are pronounce it the right way...
  • Another really well put together video, a joy to watch dude. Thanks for putting them together for us to enjoy.

You had me catapulted out of my lounger at 13.10. Wow. Ms Cools descending is a rockchick with that pulsating beat in the background! My Mini was a '66 F reg. '67 was E reg, so that Mini Cooper (in British Racing Green btw) is a 'G reg '68. Love the hummingbirds. Love that ride. Keep 'em coming Mr Berry we're all in the Covid19 slammer over here in the UK
  • @Korina42
And here I was looking forward to new bike goodies! Still, cycling up grades is fun too. 😊
  • @sheilastallard
