Stephen Hawking underwent a bronchotomy in 1985 due to complications such as muscle atrophy and pneumonia, breathing through a pipe inserted into his lungs, and then talking through a high-performance voice synthesizer attached to his wheelchair. Prior to that, he was able to speak vocally, and I found several videos of him speaking in the late 1970s. As an interest in how his interpreter was able to interpret his words, I made a video comparing the interpreted sentences with Hawking's words by adding subtitles.
ca. 1977, etc.

I am just shocked on how the interpreters were able to understand him
  • I always wondered if there was any surviving footage of his natural voice, so thank you for uploading this. What a fascinating find

Stephen Hawking’s body may be a cage, but his brain wasn’t. He was able to reach not only other people, but myself, with his mere intellect, and not even his limits would stop him in his tracks. Absolute legend.

  • May this never happen to anyone, the suffering pains me. His mind, remarkable! May all those that have suffered or are suffering from illnesses that were out of their control, may you find peace , I wish this upon nobody x ❤

The bravest man ever lived. One of the scariest things one ever faced. Walking and talking like normal and the next minute your life being taken away in a heartbeat. Rest in Peace
  • I remember the scene in The Theory of Everything when the doc confesses him about the disease and he asks “What about the brain?” Man, this shows how much confidence he had in his knowledge and that he was scared of wasting his level of knowledge. You’ll be remembered until the mankind is over, Sir. PS - Just a reference

Even with this man’s failing speech and the subtitles, you can kinda hear what he’s saying

Slowly losing full control over the body must be absolutely terrifying. Brave man for not letting it stop him! RIP
