Winnie Vs Wilma *Meg reacts*

Published 2024-07-23
A short video for you guys today, but hopefully an interesting one. As you know both Winnie and Wilma went eventing a couple of weekends ago, so I thought it would be fun to compare their cross country rounds side-by-side. I'll discuss Winnie's hiccup through the water a little more, and also how I was trying a new tactic with Wilma to lead to a more confident round. Let me know if you enjoy this style of video, and of course which horse you would rather tackle a cross country course with. Don't forget to like, comment and subscribe to stay up-to-date with all of our pony adventures.

AD| A massive thank you to Equireel for providing these videos, they are the most amazing learning tool, so I will leave the link to their website down below. Whether you have an event coming up, or you want to re-live one from the past, they are well worth checking out as they have a huge archive of thousands of rounds.

At the water fence judges are usually told that the horse can go sideways but not back and because she kept moving probably saved her.

I'm totally here for more side-by-side comparisons of the junior squad! Always fun to watch the youngsters learning the game :)
  • @janeminwell4395
Would say that Winnie was the most impressive, apart from the water, she seems very brave. Wilma more cautious, but still developing trust in you. Both showing lots of future potential, I think!
  • @ArtsyFarm
I think Winny could benefit from a trip to the beach. Going in and out of the water and it being fun.
  • @clogl
if i had to guess, i'd say I see winnie as more brave- like she'd get you in AND out of trouble. wilma to me seems more sensible and I think she'll really hone your skills by forcing you to trust yourself so she can trust you as well. once that bridge is built, I think she'll be a real top level horse.
  • They're both coming along so well! It's all about the way you encourage them with so much patience and kindness. Couldn't POSSIBLY pick a fave, they're both awesome 😊

I think Winnie being a home bred her connection to you is strong and gives her the confidence she is showing. Wilma and you are still developing this bond which in my experience takes up to a couple of years for it to become unbreakable. Both mares are giving you their the current best and this will continue to improve as they mature.
  • Good rounds on green horses. You are taking on a lot with these two young talented steeds. Especially when you think that you have not had years and years of lessons and exhibiting on a highly broke horse. You are both teaching and learning, doing both well. Many riders have the leg up of being taught for years on dependable warriors and do not do as well as you do. Wilma needs your confidence and trust in different places than Winnie. Adjusting to that is not easy. Give yourself more grace. You deserve it.

Very interesting and informative. Love watching the equireel footage. Winnie seems to be a tad more forward and enthusiastic. Wilma more steady and calculating. I think the jump judge at the water was being quite generous. Although Winnie didn't step back, or turn, she was close to the time limit before getting her toes wet!......😅. Great video. ❤

This is so interesting. I always like hearing someone compare and contrast their own horses.

Now before anyone has a go because I will critique or may sound as though I disagree, Meg asked for comment and it is with lots of input that we make our way in the world. Two very different mares, Winnie is the gang ho go get um girl who will find her way round most things with her huge scope and ability. She doesn't care about the pull you tend to have prior to a fence because she is going with or without you. Wilma on the other hand, has lost her lovely naive acceptance and I fear has been adversely affected by your pull and push prior to a fence because as you state she is a way more sensitive mare and needs a hand holding but not a 'catastrophic" arrangement prior to a fence. She has learned over this short time to question and second guess and be way more alert if not almost defiant about moving forward. For me, and take this as you will, I would go back to allowing her to enter a fence with a contact but completely on her own to find her stride so that she begins to get it that you are there but she can do this. These are tiny fences and she can mess up or sail out on a long one with little to no bother. Soon she will have her own eye in and rely not only on you but mostly on herself which is exactly what is require across the country. My choice Wilma. She will go further in the long run and has a real touch of class. Winnie is a stunning pony club champs horse who could take a youngster miles. But hey if I am honest I always had mine around the 17hh mark !

Always interesting to go back over videos and especially when you have two youngsters at the same level to compare the pair and see where we as riders are allowing mistakes to happen or the weak spots in our training!
  • @DS-ky9dl
I love the way that you rode them both. Every time riding is a training opportunity, and you did great. Winnie seems braver at this time, but that can change in the future. Great job.
  • @lisawatson7696
Both of them did a good job for you. If you have a steam or river accessible near you, then get Winney in there as much as possible to show her water is fun. I love the outtakes at the ends of your videos 😂 I wonder how many people actually miss them 🤔 because they don't watch until the end.
  • @gemmabraga9580
Always been Winnie for me ❤ But Wilma is a star too ⭐️
  • @annjohnson8437
Both mares did a great job! They are coming along nicely, and you are riding them really well! ❤
  • @Thatholygal
It's amazing how far they've both come and all thanks to your hard work and lots of eventful lessons (Simons defo taking credit😂)
  • @gailst55
So enjoyed both!! I do love Wilma, but all your horses are lovely. Thanks for showing us. Thanks Equireel!!!
  • Great rounds of green horses. And you're right, you always learn from watching them. Well done, Meg, for recognizing that Winnie and Wilma ARE 2 different horses, and NEED YOU to ride each of them differently on cross country. So chuffed that you see that!!
