the 20 MM GAU-22/A cannon isn't one of F-35 forte . . . the detachable gun pod attached to the under fuselage centreline hard point is more like an afterthought from the Vietnam War . . . not really an advantage especially when compared to the A-10F Thunderbolt III multi role ground attack fighter or the F-16V Fighting Falcon (Block 70) multi role all weather fighter for that matter . . .

It is a good aircraft in its own right but it will still never to be able to do what the A-10 is designed to do plain and simple!! Hate all you want on the A-10 but it is the CAS King of the World!

ONLY ONE F-35 of three variants have cannon..other 2 only carry fFOUR missiles MAX ..absurd. New upgrades get 6 missiles but won't be completed till 2026 .. 🙄 at $ ONE TRILLION for program WHY brass accepted such limitations is ridiculous..
