074: Greco Bactria - Land of a Thousand Cities

Published 2022-06-11
In the first of several episodes on the "Hellenistic Far East", we will cover the history of the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom, which controlled the lands of Central Asia stretching from Afghanistan to Kazakhstan during the third to second centuries B.C. As one of the most fascinating yet poorly understood regions in antiquity, we will try to piece together the fragmented history of Bactria and its inhabitants from the invasion of Alexander the Great to the reign of Eucratides I.

An excellent video. It is so sad that further archeological digs cannot be safely done. Even when the Americans "occupied" Afghanistan there was no safety in any non-military venture outside the main cities. I hope that the Taliban does not repeat their destruction of ancient civilizations as they did when dynamiting the the huge statue of a Buddha carved into a huge cliff wall. It is very sad that a flourishing civilization in that area is now a barely functioning society.

Wow nice, this is one of least known parts of Hellenistic history
  • When Alexander the Great or Alexander the accursed arrived in bactria/ the greek and hellenistic colonisation was so extensive that predates his father Phillips reign as the Persian deported the Greeks to bactria just like how Jews ✡ or hayastani Armenians are . So much mistakes happen on this podcast.
