There's only one problem with this song, it's too short.

I'll never forget driving from Phoenix to Tucson at sunset in the 1970's, no other traffic, red sky from a dust storm earlier, listening to this masterpiece on my tape deck. I felt like I was alone on the whole planet, and it was fantastic!

(Verse 1) 2:57 Overhead the albatross Hangs motionless upon the air And deep beneath the rolling waves In labyrinths of coral caves The echo of a distant time Comes willowing across the sand And everything is green and submarine (Chorus 1) 3:27 And no one showed us to the land And no one knows the where's or why's But something stirs and something tries And starts to climb toward the light (Verse 2) 4:11 Strangers passing in the street By chance, two separate glances meet And I am you and what I see is me And do I take you by the hand And lead you through the land And help me understand the best I can? (Chorus 2) 4:40 And no one calls us to move on And no one forces down our eyes No one speaks and no one tries No one flies around the sun (Epic Guitar Solo) 5:24 (Funky Break-Down) 7:00 (Ambient Terror) 11:15 (Ambient Hope) 14:45 (Verse 3) 19:10 Cloudless everyday You fall upon my waking eyes Inviting and inciting me to rise And through the window in the wall Come streaming in on sunlight wings A million bright ambassadors of morning (Chorus 3) 19:40 And no one sings me lullabies And no one makes me close my eyes So I throw the windows wide And call to you across the sky

I'm listening to the radio in '71 and this comes on. It's new. It's cool. No one sounded like these guys and I don't think the two album rock radio stations in L.A. that I listened to played anything else by them. And this song goes on and on. They (KMET) played all 23 minutes of it. And they played it about once a week. Radio stations used to do that. One of the best things about the best stations and DJs was that they'd surprise us from time to time. The DJs on the best stations were passionate about music and played a lot of what they loved. No programers. There seemed to be limits some limits. Like I never heard any real jazz, or black blues or unadulterated folk. And I think audience complaints put a quick end to R n' B, foreign music like East Indian or Middle-Eastern, or great pop singers like Sinatra. And I remember a DJ complaining about having to give in to playing "In A Gadd Da Vida," which he hated. So, I walked to the closest record store and bought this. And I played it nearly everyday for a long while. By the time "Dark Side..." was released, I had most of their back catalog. And a few bootlegs. Great band. Great memories.

When your children become teenagers, have them listen to this. Why? Because nothing else out there today sounds like this. Don't let this masterpiece be forgotten.

Echoes isn't just popular music, it's a classical symphony

This video says the song lasts 23:35 but it's not true. It lasts at least 30 minutes, because it's impossible to listen to anything else for at least seven minutes after the sound ends. The following silence is composed by Pink Floyd.

it's hard to believe that some people will live their entire life without hearing this song

This is peak Pink Floyd. Roger's poetic/philosophical lyrics Dave and Rick's harmonies Rick's jazzy keyboard compositions Dave's fuzzy lead guitar and guitar solos Roger's simple but effective bass riff Roger and Nick's steady and forward momentum grooves (especially the funk bit) Remains enjoyable at 24 minutes. A section that's bizarre and creepy just because.
