How well do GameBoy Refurbishments Hold Up

Published 2023-09-15
A lot of people have covered the various new parts for your GameBoy from the likes of Funny Playing and RetroSix, and how to fit them. But once they are fitted how do they hold up in the long term?

I cover how well my heavily used GameBoy Pocket has held up 18 months after I completely renewed it with a new shell, membranes, buttons, screen and lens and pick apart any issues I have had.

I also cover some of the benefits of keeping an original screen GameBoy DMG or Pocket, as well as what I think is the best option for you in terms of modifying an original GameBoy, GameBoy Pocket, GameBoy Color or GameBoy Advance.

It's great that there's readily available replacement screen choices. I agree that a GBA with modern screen is probably the best choice for compatibility and shape. I liked the form factor when I had one but couldn't stand the non-backlit screen. I moved to the GBA SP when it came out but unfortunately my hands were really cramped with its compact size. Of course I wish I had kept all of them instead selling them off a decade ago. Game prices have gone crazy the past 4 or 5 years and it's looking to be expensive if I want to rebuild my small GB and GBA game collection.

Grabbed a couple of untested GBA units from Yahoo Auctions. The shells were a bit of a mess, but after cleaning the switch with some electrical cleaner- perfect! Have since switched out the screen, shell, and popped in a lipo battery. Works great! Did you ever make a top games list for the Gameboy? - With the amount of games you've played on that thing I'm sure you'd have maybe even a top 25 by now.

Another good video. I've still got the parts to modify my GBC but never seem to get brave enough to do it.

I have a Colour GB and two GBA SP's that need these upgrades, at least the screens. I am starting to look at my DS Lite as well now as the bottom screen is starting to be non responsive.

You should catch Emuchicken on here (Team Pandory). He is from the UK, won an Amiga 600 on our channel, but he teaches in Japan. We talk a lot. Lovely guy... drop him a line, maybe do a cool collab? 🤟😎🤟

My favourite way to play GB games is still the Super Gameboy in my SNES but my goto is usually the GBA SP just because it's so pocketable. I do prefer the horizontal GBA layout though so for GBA games I usually end up going with the DS Lite. I am tempted to try modifying on though, you can do some very nice things with them.

My Parents didn't wanted me to have one as a kid and years later after the release of the psp i bought a used colore from a Friend an played Tetris Dx and Pokemon yellow :3 i think Gameboys are a perfect System! Easy to use and to maintain.

I don't think you mentioned that you also needed to get you GBP repaired while on your trip last summer. Was that really over a year ago?! Anyway, I've modded a GBA with a Funny playing laminated screen, a Gameboy Color with a Funnyplaying laminated screen, and I've an unmodded transparent Gameboy Pocket. The Funnyplaying does have a "blend" mode that attempts to resolve the transparency trick so you get some of the effect. I don't know how well that works though. My GBA was a Book Off special, it was in filthy condition and the screen was not good at all so they'd reduced to to ~500yen. Then most recently a Gameboy Color in a Hard Off, which I think was about ~2600yen which is still a decent price.
