Patience may be a virtue, however, excessive forbearance can lead adversaries to believe erroneously that America is unwilling to employ its full military power. “Proportionality” of this sort was a huge Vietnam error; it is noteworthy that Linebacker II air operations (in December, 1972) forced North Vietnam to agree to a ceasefire within only approximately two weeks.

My father was in the Air Force at Mather AFB Sacramento Ca. I was in grade school at the time. I was riding my bicycle around the beginning of the runway and a B-52 was getting ready to land. I got off my bike in front of the B-52 and laid down facing up close to the runway. The B-52 passed over me very low to the ground. I wasn't far from the beginning of the runway. The ground was shaking from the noise of the engines and scared the crap Out of me. It was about 150 to 200 feet from me getting ready to touch down. I got on my bike and never did that again.
