Quality of Service (QoS) in 5G Network Updated Video

Published 2021-01-30
The 5G QoS model is based on QoS Flows. The 5G QoS model supports both QoS Flows that require guaranteed flow bit rate (GBR QoS Flows) and QoS Flows that do not require guaranteed flow bit rate (Non-GBR QoS Flows). The 5G QoS model also supports Reflective QoS
The QoS Flow is the finest granularity of QoS differentiation in the PDU Session. A QoS Flow ID (QFI) is used to identify a QoS Flow in the 5G System. User Plane traffic with the same QFI within a PDU Session receives the same traffic forwarding treatment (e.g. scheduling, admission threshold). The QFI is carried in an encapsulation header on N3 (and N9) i.e. without any changes to the e2e packet header. QFI shall be used for all PDU Session Types. The QFI shall be unique within a PDU Session. The QFI may be dynamically assigned or may be equal to the 5QI

Within the 5GS, a QoS Flow is controlled by the SMF and may be preconfigured, or established via the PDU Session Establishment procedure or the PDU Session Modification procedure.
AnyQoS Flow is characterised by:
- A QoS profile provided by the SMF to the AN via the AMF over the N2 reference point or preconfigured in the AN;
- One or more QoS rule(s) and optionally QoS Flow level QoS parameters (as specified in TS 24.501 [47]) associated with these QoS rule(s)which can be provided by the SMF to the UE via the AMF over the N1 reference point and/or derived by the UE by applying Reflective QoS control; and
- One or more UL and DL PDR(s) provided by the SMF to the UPF.

Within the 5GS, a QoS Flow associated with the default QoS rule is required to be established for a PDU Session and remains established throughout the lifetime of the PDU Session. This QoS Flow should be a Non-GBR QoS Flow
A QoS Flow is associated with QoS requirements as specified by QoS parameters and QoS characteristics.

  • Excellent session. Qos deep dive neatly explained and layman can also understand these concepts easily the way it is presented. Great job!!
  • @iravkr
Extraordinary! Clear all doubts in one video only. Also if possible please make videos on traffic steering in 5G.
  • Amazing explanation, nice to see these videos for a 5G begineer. Thank you so much
  • @mikema8226
Clear description of 5GQoS ! Do you have any idea about which telecom service provider can offer the 4G and 5G QoS service globally? We want to integrate the service into our app. Thanks!
  • @NajidMr
Wow Kumar Sir, you explained so well & very easy to digest. Even person from Non-Telco field can remember all terms & theory.
  • Just loved the way you explained network slicing and QoS flow in 5G.. Request you to kindly upload a video on network slicing and various resource mgmt methods in 5G including the RL based methods.
  • @rimbeji7827
Great presentation, very helpful, I enjoyed and sure I learned a lot
  • A very interesting video sir..really helpful to understand the QOS concepts. Requesting you to please continue posting the videos on various 5G topics like UE Initial access and carrier aggregation etc
  • Great presentation! I have a question about the QFI insertion. From what I understand the QFI insertion is done at the UPF, after the IP flow arrives there. Given that the traffic is encrypted, how can the UPF identify what's the correct QFI for each flow? Is it something related to the packet header?
  • @chirag3179
Namaste sir, great presentation, can you kindly do a session on 5G detailed pdu session call flows and also handover flows.
  • @vivan12377
Is it true that in 5G PDU session establishment takes place separately after 5G registration whereas Default bearer gets created during or at the time attach success in LTE , is this the major difference?
  • I think there is a mistake regarding RQA; In Qos parameters description part of your video, RQA is for GBR while based on 3gpp 23.501 RQA is only for non-GBR. Thank you
  • Very informative presentation and easy to understand way of explanation wonderful....How Can i get these slides ?
  • I have 2 questions : a) Is SMF responsible for allocation of IP address to a UE? b) Does UDM use the UDR to store user-related data and DN Profile info ? Thank you
  • @vivan12377
Nice video , Nice explanations ,Quite Helpfull... What is TEID?
  • @vivan12377
Sir i have a question , very frequently asked -What is the Key difference between 5G registrations and LTE Attach procedure?
