How does someone who was born into slavery, whose master broke their leg and crippled them for life, somehow escape all that and become one of the fathers of Stoicism and an amazing thinker? Epictetus had every reason to be unable to transcend his own struggles, but instead he is one of the most important Stoic philosophers. He lived the philosophy and it saved him.

100% I credit Stoicism for making it through losing my Grandmother in January this year, and then suddenly my Mom 2 weeks afterward. It's the source of my strength through this past year.
  • Well I have been practicing Stoicism for a very short time. Last week I put out $ 2200.00 to buy a truck on a platform. It was a Scam . I usually follow my intuition, and thought I was doing so this time. The most amazing thing about this whole situation is that losing the money didn't turn me into a stark raving mad idiot . Before I started using the philosophy of Stoicism it would've thus triggering a series of even worse actions. I looked at my wife, and said . We will move forward . Dust ourselves off. Bad things happen . It is money ,and money can never take the place of calm, and calculated response to what life throws at us. Thank you Ryan for writing The obstacle is the way. It has changed this old dog. I am forever grateful.

What do we choose? Resentment, bitterness, anger, unfairness ..... OR forgiveness, strength, fortitude, looking for the good, looking for what we might do with what has happened. Resilience is a skill that will ensure we live an untroubled life! Meaning we deliberately move our focus from resentment, towards overcoming what has happened.

Turn what you have to do, into what you get to do. If someone insults you, and you react bad to it. You’re complicit to it

Life isn't just about doing the things you want to do, but doing the things you have to do.
