Devil May Cry 3 is one of the most revered action games of all time, and that was an impressive feat coming off the disastrous Devil May Cry 2. DMC3 is one of my favorite games ever made, so today I will tell you why that is!

I saw the previous title "Yet Another Devil May Cry 3 Retrospective" and dude, you gotta cut yourself some slack. Just because an old game was already discussed doesn't mean your own thoughts are irrelevant. We're here for you.
  • I will never forget when vergil catches those bullet with his sword and then fling them back
  • The badass cutscenes in DMC3 were directed by Yuji Shimomura who's not only a competent action director, but also an amazing fight choreographer. (He would later go on to be involved in the later DMC games cutscenes and a few Bayonetta games as well.)

That intro caught me off guard I thought you hit puberty twice 😂

18:45 There´s more to DMC3´s Devil Trigger than just attack and defense buffs as it also kinda incorporates the DT amulets from DMC2. The difference is that they are preselected for each weapon and you cannot change them. Like Cerberus has the Quick Heart allowing you to run faster than with any other weapon, Nevan has the Healing Heart, giving you faster heath regen as well as giving you Air Raid like the Areal Heart. Agni and Rudra has the Offence Heart, white Beowulf´s DT has higher defense. Rebellion gets a glide move for some reason.

One of the few gripes I have about this one is the fact that Vergil didn't have his own dedicated campaign, aside from specific cutscenes at the beginning the adventure. All his missions were just Dante's but recycled. I mean in the missions where you would ordinarily fight Vergil as Dante, they just have Vergil fight himself, but palette swapped his color to red so you can tell them apart. Like don't get me wrong, it's incredibly cool that he was made a playable part of the game, but the lack of originality in his "story" does bug me. A sadly, recurring trend throughout the remainder of the franchise. Again, it is incredibly cool and satisfying to have the option to play as him if you so choose, but with the original intro we see at the start of his campaign, I was under the assumption all his missions would be as well.
  • Devil May Cry 3 is honestly still my favorite game in the Devil May Cry series. Devil May Cry 5 is an extremely close second for me but there is just something about this game that just hits so different. It perfected what it sought out to do with its gameplay, story and charachters and introduced one of the most iconic rivals of all time Vergil as well as saving the entire DMC series from ruin in spectacular fashion. Easily one of the best games ever in my opinion.

Dante awakens not because he lost to vergil in thier first fight but because but because vergil stabbed him with his own sword

Lady´s story in this game is amazing. She really is the non-playable secret main character of DMC3 and one of the best female characters in gaming. As much as I love DMC4 & 5, I will never not be disappointed with what they did with her character going forward.

Did not expect that Mayo crossover at the beginning but it did not disappoint. Gonna go watch his next

11:16 This cutscene always confused me. Apart from introducing the Jester, they spend a large amount of time talking about the "power generator for this entire sector" and how this is important information you should remember or write it down. It is never once used after this cutscene. Maybe it was a discarded mechanic replaced by the combat wheels or something.

my only issue with the video is that you said vergil jusr uses reused animations from the boss fights, for me thats the coolest part, you're literally playing as the actual boss that you had to fight

While Character Action games (with the exception of Nier Automata. A very emotional game I highly recommend) have a stigma of not delivering the most compelling of stories, I personally love DMC3's small story. Seeing Dante go from rejecting his family's legacy and demonic power, to later taking responsibillity and accepting his role as humanity's protector just like his father. All the while, Vergil rejects his human half for the sake of more power. Dante follows the classical "Hero's Journey" and all the ways Vergil acts as Dante's foil is so fascinating to watch. Easily the best narrative in DMC and one of the better told action games stories.

@ J's Reviews: Small but important thing I feel the need to highlight here concerning Dante's devil awakening when you mentioned it around the 17 minute mark. It isn't the defeat it's self or even the taking of the amulet that caused him to awaken, it's actually the fact that Vergil used his brother's own personal sword to deliver what he intended to be the final blow. Or rather more aptly put, the key to awakening his devil power was/is to be impaled by Rebellion it's self since it's pretty much keyed to him on what can be considered a literal spiritual and bloodline deep level. Keep that in mind because that's gonna be important later on in another moment too when reaching the time for your eventual DMC5 review. Oh and one more small thing, though I'm pretty sure it might have already been brought to your attention, but Doppleganger and the Dante/Vergil tag team fight are in a funny way just a hidden pseudo-multiplayer mode since, at least on the PS2 version if you got a second controller plugged in and a friend around you can have them take control personally of the clone & Vergil respectively.

Someone, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this game also helped kickstart the "Feautirng Dante from the DMC series". Since there was an agreement made. Dante would be featured in SMT 3: Nocturne and the artist from SMT would design DMC 3's devil triggers. Great video, to this day I still watch the ending scene and listen to Devils Never Cry. I love this game.

Such an absolute masterpiece of a game, easily well over a 100 hours in it and I still get the urge to replay it every now and then. Great stuff, looking forward to more from you!
  • @supervergil13
I grew up with DMC 3. It still is one of my favourite games. Its gameplay, story, characters, boss fights, are all pretty good and still hold up.
  • @bdhuffman42
Agreed. Air hike should not only be available for every weapon, but it should also be something that is a part of the standard moveset
  • @Rodolphin
I personally think that DMC3 did Boss Rush right. Of course it’s there to show how much stronger you become through out the game but it can also be used for practice other strategies you didn’t use before hand without going through the puzzles. Plus most of the bosses are just fun to fight against. Unlike MegaMan where it feels redundant because the developers never gives the Bosses in the boss rush new moves and all bosses have Spark Mandrill syndrome.

36:10 what always made this scene hit so hard for me was that it was Lady, the person who clashed with Dante so often due to her refusal to see anything more than just another demon in him is the one who says it.
