"move in silence like the s in island" is a child of "real g's move in silence like lasagna" and it's a good and worthy bar

29:57 this was absolutely hilarious. As a black male suhth’nuh, I immediately understood and could speak it, so hearing how significantly different it could be interpreted was really endearing. I sound and look the same when listenin to native Scottish folk

I’m giving you the view you asked for in your most recent video ❤ great analysis

This was a fantastic breakdown! My family is from northern MS, less than an hour from Memphis. My older relatives have more of a traditional black Mississippi accent, with some Memphis twists like 'mur-sic', but GloRilla sounds just like some of my cousins. I grew up in VA so I don't have much of a southern accent (at least to me), but it's easy for me to understand and feels really nostalgic to hear. Having grown up in mostly white and metropolitan areas, I'm used to hearing people disparage those dialects or write people with them off as dumb. My parents mostly lost their accent after they moved away to intentionally try and assimilate into professional environments better. It was awesome to see someone in your position speak about AAVE and these regional dialects with such respect and use it to educate people. AVAA ❤

For an extreme example of language revealing who you are and the dominant power structure punishing you for it: During the Parsley massacre (1937, Dominican Republic), Dominican troops interrogated thousands of civilians demanding that each victim say the word "parsley" (perejil). If the accused could not pronounce the word to the interrogators' satisfaction, they were deemed to be Haitians and killed. (PS: The 'correct' pronunciation involved rolling the r)
  • huge episode/essay for me as somebody terribly excited by linguistic evolution, the ways that language informs thinking, and how meaning can be conveyed despite linguistic differences

AVAA 25:39 if you love Glo and are currently teaching a course on 90’s female rappers, and considering your appreciation of southern rap, you should really listen to La Chat and Gangsta Boo. They paved the way for a lot of what we see today with female rappers especially from the south, on gunt

AVAA. Memphis native checking in mane! Aye mane, I subbed when you mentioned Skin Tight from The Ohio Players. That's that real pimpin' mane.
  • I’m a new subscriber because of your Drake/Kendrick videos. I really enjoy the level of effort and research that goes into your content. Your insight is unique and necessary. AVAA

6:57- 7:09 We're witnessing the Skye slow slippery slope slide into video editing.

AVAA! as a fellow lover of linguistics, but outside of America, it's so valuable learning more about the complexity of languages there!!
  • @spiller2218
Skye, I was having a terrible day, but then I started watching this video and remembered how much comfort your videos bring to me. Thankyou.

AVAA. came from the beef vids thanks for the good vids. I also studied linguistics in college and am from the south so I appreciate the knowledge. The only rap ablum with guitar I enjoy is Blakroc with the Black Keys collabs.

AVAA! I watched this after your video about language. I also LOVE listening to Shannon Sharpe, it's ashame Skip didn't respect Shannon. The up side - it's a WIN for the YouTube community!
