They say you must take the bitter with the sweet, but what about the toxic? We all have a few candy horror stories, but some people's sweet trauma goes beyond eating a popcorn butter-flavored Jelly Belly. Take Kinder Eggs, which have been banned in the US since the 1930s. The plastic toy hidden inside the candy has caused several children to choke (though everyone affected knowingly consumed the toys), and citizens who attempt to smuggle them into the States can be fined up to $2,500 per egg.

I lived in Germany for the first seven years of my life, so Kinder Eggs were a big part of my childhood. They don't just stick the toy inside; the toy is in a "yolk" capsule that is too big to make it past your uvula anyway. And if somehow you do manage to swallow the giant golf ball sized plastic oval that is clearly not food, well kid, congratulations on giving natural selection a helping hand.
  • If kids are going to hurt animals after eating gummies they're already F'd up. It's not the candy.

I love the deep concern for kinder eggs being a potential choking hazard for kids but not of any other foods and household products (400+ harmful chemicals)hazards that are okay for FDA approval in the U.S. today. Oh man.
  • The idea of a candy smuggling ring existing in the US of all places sounds so absurd, funny, and wrong all at the same time...
  • After Candy Cigarettes were banned another company tried to keep the tradition alive by introducing bubble gum cigarettes. The novelty of these is that they were covered in so much powered sugar that if you put one in your mouth and puffed the sugar would make "smoke".

Kinder eggs are absolutely back in the USA. They redesigned the packaging a few years ago. The egg has 2 halves now. One side for the chocolate and the other half sealed with the toy inside

The roadkill gummies controversy was so stupid. Eating a candy dead animal is offensive yet 90% of the world eats actual dead animals. And I highly doubt eating a dead animal shaped gummy encouraged anyone to harm an animal 🤣
  • I knew a guy who ate a whole bag of sugar-free gummi bears on a dare once. He was shitting rainbows for the next 24 hours
  • I remember buying bubblegum "cigars" at the local convenience store. While I don't blame anyone for wanting them banned, I never took up smoking, most likely because my parents didn't smoke or drink. The Kinder Egg ban is ridiculous, though, especially the excessive fines and confiscations.

The Haribo Sugar-Free Gummy Bears are best remembered by all the over-the-top Amazon reviews folks left about them since they were hilarious to read.

I never knew about the Kinder Surprise ban until fairly recently, back in 99/2000 a friend in Canada sent me a gift box of different Canadian treats and Kinder Surprise was one of them, little did we know she was smuggling sweet sweet contraband into the US.

When I remember of the kids in my class who actually tried snorting smarties , I know natural selection is real 💀

Omg the haribo sugar free bears, I remember watching someone read the story of the man that had explosive diarrhea at the airport, it was the funniest thing. I can't look at those innocent looking bears anymore without thinking about all the people that spend hours in the bathroom after eating one.

Established Titles is possibly the biggest grift I've seen promoted on youtube. Although, I give whoever created this props for finding such a clever way to swindle people.
  • Sweet cigarettes were banned here in GB some years ago, but they quickly reappeared rebranded as 'candy sticks'. The only difference is that the candy sticks lacked the red tip, which the sweet cigarettes used to have to simulate the lit end.

Canadian (at an American Walmart): Where do you keep the Kinder Surprise eggs? American shopkeeper: We don't sell Kinder Surprise in the US, they're too dangerous. Canadian: Then where do you keep the guns? American shopkeeper: Right next to the children's toy section.

I grew up in oregon, i remember one of my classmates talking to me about mashing up smarties and snorting it. I told him don't me stupid that's a terrible idea and he told me what do you know and did it anyway. He was unhappy with me as i rolled my eyes at him as the inside of his nose burned with crushed up candy inside it. He wasn't hurt, but he was miserable for the rest of the day.
  • And yet Kinder Eggs are still around in Canada. I grew up eating them! And I never once choked on a toy. So weird!

as a 38 year old man child I could live off of candy but my doctor told me that I need to eat "adult people food" I'm getting a new doctor
