In this video, I share my personal struggle with being overly concerned about future updates to my music gear and software. This obsession hindered my ability to enjoy making music with the tools I already have. Join me as I discuss the concept of how our imagination, while powerful, can sometimes lead to anxiety about things beyond our control. Let's explore how to shift our focus back to creativity and making the most of our current resources. Don't let the fear of missing out on the latest updates stop you from making great music today!

Well I think one of the first things We do when We buy gear is go straight to YouTube to see others who bought the same thing, for validation or are purchase. I don't buy much gear but I still do this every time.
  • @AndyMangele
I absolutely agree with you - the same goes for certain gearheads. But having that said I can appreciate updates when they provide me with stuff that is useful for my style.

I was browsing Youtube content for DJs and definitely NOT expecting something this relevant to me right now 👏

Nice video. It wasn’t what I was expecting…in a good way. Excellent lesson on mindfulness, non-attachment…and how expectations can be the architects of our own unhappiness. It is okay to want things. It’s a very different thing to feel entitled to them and to become angry or frustrated when they aren’t forthcoming.

Gear obsession is a way for people to avoid the anxiety of making imperfect music

Thanks for sharing! This was an important reminder to not think so much about plugins in general (which strings library is the best.. which new version is coming soon) but only about how to get better at making music. The Stephen Covey book is also really helpful, a friend gave me his copy several years ago. Thanks again! I enjoy your content.

Trying to exist in the present as much as possible is great advice for most things in life. When it comes to GASing for gear I tell myself the Beatles managed to make great recordings on four tracks.

Great video. I did my best to avoid this phenomenon by selling my laptop once I got machine+ so I had no choice but to use machine if I wanted to make music. It's been an amazing journey.

100% agree. Bet tipp for getting more creative and productive in music is to just take the gear you have and work it. Its not gonna lead to a lot more and better music, its also a lot more fun ;)

Find workarounds for what you can't do and hope for an update that makes things easier. Usually the updates that I was waiting for so long didn't even address my issues leaving me so disappointed. You'll also have to realise that no gear is perfect. Some are close but it's never perfect.

Thank you for this. All great points and a great reminder to not become lost in the fear of missing out and instead use it for what you bought it for in the 1st place. To be creative.

Thanks for sharing your experience! The same problem I faced many times. My example: Deluge. I've been waiting for updates many years. But even after they opened a source code and all is possible, the community firmware is out, I'm still waiting for something. Your suggestion to be in the moment is very helpful!

You're not wrong! I just sold Bitwig Studio 5.1, Live Suite 12, Push 3 Standalone, Cubase Pro 13 and Studio One 6 Pro... I'm down to Reason 12 + a small Akai controller and never felt... more free :) Having tried Reason 13 beta I don't think I'll upgrade, either.

Very good observation! An almost Buddhist point of view. But from desire and frustration come great achievements too, at least for exceptional people
  • @vraalten
Great viewpoint! Use what you have and recognise that creativity comes from you and not your tools! Have fun, experiment and make music you love!

The problem with the Maschine+, and Maschine in general, is that it needs time signature/tempo changes & round-robin sampling as far back as version 1, and Native Instruments/their forum users do not think it is a priority. They would rather spend a lot of money on lifestyle ads. Sucks. I felt the same way in terms of "justifying new gear" and trying to figure out how to transition out of the ecosystem, and arrived at a similar position. It doesn't make the $1500 I paid for Maschine+ hurt any less, but at least I'm turning it on and making music again.
