World Chess Champion Ding Liren returns for the 86th edition of the Tata Steel Masters, a 14-player single round-robin taking place from 13-28 January in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands.

The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move 1. A tie for first place will be decided by two blitz (3+2) games. If still tied, the players keep playing single "sudden death" games where White gets 2.5 minutes and Black 3 minutes until one side wins. The monetary prizes will be shared evenly. You break into the enemy's castle, tie up all his staff and force the king to dance around naked in front of them before you slay him

Mate in nine???? I often miss mate in one.

8:02 The Black King is absolutely in a "TOMB OF BLACK PIECES "😂😂😂😂
  • @Heisl.
    This game feels absolutely surreal
  • @tmsHG
Absolutely astounding, great content and analysis!

6:20 "The game continues but nothing serious here" Well, the game was originally nothing serious too until Wei Yi sacrificed his first rook. Wei Yi just made everything serious out of nothing he is a modern Tal.

My favorite thing about this game, Houdini 1.5a looking 20 moves deep doesn't see the win after Rxf7. Only after way more thought does it figure out that it's crushing. IIRC some other more powerful engines also missed some of Yi's moves in this.

"The rook cannot move because it's pinned by both of the Queens" I'd really enjoy this position...

So many checkmate threats with so many sacrifices. Black king looked like seeking space outside the board to be safe.

#suggestion Since we're talking about tombs, Harper vs Zuk (1971), please. It was such an immortal zugzwang.
  • @drzlecuti
Great game and analysis. It was interesting to see how Wei Yi considered both offense and defense in that closing sequence.

    Beautiful. Creative. Daring. Brave. Sacrificial!
