The ancient rite of casting evil spirits from the possessed is on the rise in the United States. Historically, demonic possessions have been used to describe mental or physical illnesses and even strings of bad luck, but the scientific community has debunked many of the outdated convictions.

With the U.S. being home to 20 percent of the world’s exorcists, VICE investigates why the phenomenon of exorcism is on the rise. We speak to Father Lampert, a member of the International Association of Exorcists and Michael Shermer, a former Evangelical Christian and founder of Skeptic magazine, to see why the modern exorcism is thriving in the West.

i like how vice conveniently left out how in the Catholic Church anybody who says they need an exorcism has to go through extensive medical and psychological examinations to make sure that what they are experiencing is definitely not a mental illness

Can we just get a Netflix film or series based on this priest’s experiences, so Colm Feore can portray him?

I have had first hand experience with a demon. It's nothing like in the movies. I did experience temperature change, felt like something was breathing in my face and there were growls and a sense of anger. I saw absolutely nothing, no hideous creature, it was invisible. When I spoke the name of Jesus it went ballistic but it never touched me. It ended up going down the hallway into a bedroom. The door slammed and you could see the door move like someone was punching the door from the other side. When my friends and I prayed it started crying out, like it was multiple voices. God can give you strength in these times and fear is gone. After it's over then your mind freaks out.

Father Vince was the priest at our church for many years, he actually baptized my son. He's a very interesting man. Very dry and matter of fact, but funny (as you can tell). My favorite thing he ever said about exorcism is that people get it in their head that he's gonna show up and swing dead chickens around by their necks and burn sage or something. People are surprised that exorcism is actually just prayer and faith in God. His stories are incredible, but told like it's just another day at work. He's wholly unaffected by the stunts of Satan, just another day at the office. If you meet him, you'd completely understand why he was chosen for the role. Amazing guy. One day he rang my doorbell and I thought, "oh shit... there's an exorcist on my porch. This can't be good." He was just returning my ID that I dropped at church. 😂 Normal everyday guy. My family and I are big fans.

My professor in religion and ethics told us of his first time seeing an exorcism when he was in college he assisted a pastor with some deacons in casting the demon away through songs and prayers. The possessed man turned to their side and said in a demonic voice "You're praying to cast me out when you're cheating with your wife?" then one of the deacons got up and was too terrified he walked away.

Many people downright mock & ridicule not believing in demonic possession however I experienced a horrific demonic possession of my very young daughter. She verbalized incidents she had no possible way of knowing including things that took place when I was little ... she had absolute knowledge at that time of horrific things and stating unsettling ugly statements. I was just a single mother of 3 children and gathered my other 2 children while we prayed over my daughter asking God to place his hand on this situation. We prayed 5 hours for her until she said "mommy, he's gone." Faith is soooo important.
  • I appreciate vice giving an even take on a truly extraordinary phenomenon.... I understand they still benefit from pushing a certain position, but this felt as close to a journalistic approach as I have seen in a long time.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled off was convincing people he’s not real!!
  • Damnit now I have to rewatch the video because I was too busy reading comments and not paying attention to the video.
  • How anyone can look around at the world around them and still not believe in spiritual warfare is beyond me.
  • I’ve seen the possessed, someone that has opened their mind to the demons. I dated one, claimed to be Christian and wasn’t. It hits different when the person you like blacks out then you literally talk to a demon. The thing is that I felt the change, and it was all over video call. I felt chills. After I got out of the relationship, I decided to devote my life to God, and I have no regrets. To everyone, He loves you. Just thinking about it now, I really see areas where she was possessed and the effects that it had. She gave herself to the evil one btw.
  • Gotta love the humor "I jokingly like to refer to her as my Ex-or-sistant" Pure gold lmao

I want Vice to give me more of these types of videos.

Back in the 70s in my dads village in Greece there was an lady who was in here 70s and was possessed. My father told me the story and can tell he was freaked out by it but basically he was one of 4 men restraining this little old lady in the church during the exorcism who was freakishly strong and happened to be speaking in Different tongue. so how does a little old lady from a remote part of the world who had no form education suddenly start speaking a different language. Yes this stuff is all fake guys until it you see it then it changes your perception real fast.
  • @Calumity
"Once you start to believe in something the confirmation bias kicks in" for someone who is supposed to be smart he seems to not realize this goes both ways. He has a very clear bias, you could give him absolute 100% proof and he would deny exorcisms are real.
  • @ZZZ2573
I don't know, the father strikes me as a reasonable, genuine, open and tolerant person, which is completely the opposite of what religion haters depict catholic priests
  • It is hard to believe in the paranormal until something paranormal happens to you. Never close your minds to the possibilities.
  • I seen real possessions at my church as a child. When the pastor told Satan he had to leave and that he held no power over the possessed lady, I literally watched the door fly open with no force there was a strong wind that almost broke the hindges off the door, but funny thing is there was no trees or anything blowing outside, no air nothing, the door only opened when the pastor told Satan to leave after he fought with our pastor through the lady, he finally left and slammed the door behind him. I remember the pastor asking who Satan was he growled through that woman and green stuff was coming out of her mouth she yelled in a manly voice “YOU KNOW WHO I AM!!!!! “ LUCIFER IS MY NAME” I just just told my 27 year old daughter about this story the other day because we were discussing a text she got from a guy that likes her, the guy told my daughter he wanted her soul, I told her that wasn’t the guy that was Satan speaking directly through him. My daughter told the guy a few days later what he had said, he had no memory of it, I told her sure he didn’t remember what he said because Satan took over. I told my daughter demons are real and we come in contact with them every day they walk around in human form. The murderer, the child molestor, the abuser, the robbers, those are just a few examples of demons. These type of people are not themselves Satan has taken over their lives. That’s why we have to be careful of who we give our bodies to as well, you could be sleeping with a demon and not know it. When fluid is exchanged now the demon is in you through blood and semen, in the healing community we call it soul ties it’s real.
  • I've experienced what is what people may refer to as the sleep paralysis demon various times. But the very first time I ever encountered the being was when I first actually got serious about reading the Bible. I had picked up the book and read from Genesis to Exodus in one sitting. Prior to that there would always be strange sounds in the several houses my family and I would move to at the point of bringing in a priest to bless hour house once. It's one thing for kids to perhaps experience something scary at night but it did eventually start getting more and more out of hand. My family was always catholic or at least during the time my mother was married to her ex husband. However the man was very sinful in terms of cheating, drinking, smoking, and God knows what else. All these years later I believe it was him that was carrying all these demons around with him because there was no way every house we went to seemed to have a haunting. Even other family members have spoken up whenever they'd visit that some weird things would happen at night. From strange sounds of footsteps when no one has gotten up to, the TVs turning on by themselves in different rooms, we'd have toys go off by themselves, my moms ex husband himself has heard someone say Jesus right after we went to bed after watching Passion of the Christ for the time (that night was the night our toys onthe first floor kept going on, both he and my mom were also awakened by the sound of sand being thrown at their window) Basically a lot of weird things have followed me which I thinks stems from that. But the ultimate evil act he committed was raping my sister was was just a child. Then things really start kicking up. Only we had not known he did that until years later and it made sense why thing began getting weirder. He was always abusive to me and even handed me my first drink of alcohol at a very very young age. I'm an alcoholic to this day now. I do believe the Lord looks out for me, I have felt his presence and can if I truly ask him for it. I played an Ouja board once when I was young and was told 3 demons follow me. I suppose one is the addiction to alcohol, the sleep paralysis, and a succubus. I have literally on only two occasions been wide awake and felt like something was having sex with me. And even if I tried to somehow use my brain to replicate that specific sensation I never could. However I was introduced to last at an age no child should've been introduced to. Demons are real, they're around us more often than we care to pay attention to for whatever the reason. Its not always acting out and speaking in tongues, sometimes it's really not being in control of yourself
