Policing the police: What powers do civilian bodies have to hold officers accountable?

Video of police chasing a suspect going the wrong way on an Ontario highway last month startled many Canadians.

The pursuit ended in a crash that killed four people, including an infant.

The province’s police watchdog is now investigating the incident, but the officers have declined to testify. They have the right to do so but it’s brought police oversight into focus.

Global’s Nathaniel Dove reports looks at how those who wear the badge are held accountable.

Let's make everyone a police officer. Therefore, the crime statistics would go down to nothing because every time someone did something wrong we would investigate ourselves and find no wrongdoing. Canada would technically be the safest place to live if we were all police officers investigating ourselves for our crimes

It’s because most people who wanna become cops play call of duty till four in the morning and decide to pick up the badge and gun to try out their new skills. They learned on call of duty.
  • When Will Canada's RCMP begin holding Canada's GOVERNMENT accountable?

This is why people don't respect 🥓

Why don’t the Canadian “police” wear body cams , that would change things, accountability 😅

Any criminal driving the wrong way should get a long prison sentence, perhaps 15 years.

The System will always protect itself.
  • Sure, sue for negligence if you have a problem. Criminals are disproportionately in control, record and prosecute

An important issue. Police should not be allowed to police themselves. An effective civilian oversight body is the way to build trust between the police and public.

Canada government or the reckless cops should stop putting a band-Aid on it and fix the stupid problem and those how say it helps have a inquiry are truly the problem for Canadians and Canada to many stupid politicians from cops and inquiry group are make it worst off for Canada and why because citizens do something bad we go to jail but most cops get a slap and a fine or fired from their job their is something wrong with this country and government stupid.

Not much. What is really the bigger problem is that the police boards and watchdogs don't take accountability seriously. In Kingston, Ontario, there's no problem finding plenty of police to prevent any traffic from crossing anywhere along the Santa Claus Parade route, but, when it comes to getting a drug addict to remove his tent from a public park there's not a single policeman to do that for weeks. Success is measured by news releases, after university students disturb neighbourhoods with drunken revelry at Homecoming. The news media just reports the "success" without thinking. Anyone stopping speeders on the 401 near Kingston? Nope!
  • When you the police they are never around to busy passing out coffee and donuts ❗️
  • They've been harassing me for 16 years across three provinces and when I complain I get nowhere. I'm in touch with a mental health team, but they think I'm delusional, and the list of their activities in my life are never ending. Accountability please!

I agree accountability is important. Is there an epidemic of criminals not being held accountable or police running around terrorizing citizens? We can walk and chew gum, but let's not pretend one issue is nearly as prevalent as the other.

The day 7 of them try to beat me down.. I can be certain none of us are making it home!! Very simple :)
  • A police man in windsor Ontario starts at 85k a year in detroit its 38k a year some thing wrong we have a nice city .no gun violence 😮

They’re never held accountable. That’s why one of them was able to literally make up a story in her mind, come to a conclusion based on her made up story, and arrested me for assault… after I had a home invasion and was beaten up by the intruders. Not only that, she decided on her own that one of the intruders LIVED in my house and therefore KICKED ME OUT FOR A MONTH while giving the intruder full access to my house because “the intruder wasn’t safe around me”. Of course when I got back the place was trashed and a bunch of stuff was missing, but at least the intruder was safe. ❤

You can actually defend yourself from the police if they illegally try to detain you.
