That dude is 100% Shawn Ryan's Asian doppelganger.
  • Saw a video where a Vietnam veteran bought a brand new Rolex in 1974 and shipped it home. It sat in the box with all the papers never worn. Appraised for $345k
  • To this day, that's why Shawn Ryan wears a Rolex He's said this numerous times.

When I was in commercial dive school we were all told to buy a Rolex when we started making good money because if you were stranded in some foreign land you could always sell or trade your Rolex for a plane ticket. I actually ended up cashing it in on that very thing.

The idea of using a Rolex as currency while traveling is still a common theme for international travelers today. I also know ppl who use them because they’re not allowed to bring 20k in cash to whatever country they’re flying to
  • @ntutill
British SAS have gold sovereigns sewed into clothing. Same kind of idea
  • @Teerifficgolf
“A Rolex is your ticket home” is the phrase I believe
  • @Sukhumvit1
A lot of the pilots in Vietnam also had gold chains for the same reason.
  • @Ben-xf7uy
My grandpa called it his "Anywhere in the world watch." Because he could sell it anywhere in the world and get home. He was army and in Vietnam. Miss him everyday
  • I was a Special Agent with Diplomatic Security…yes most of us wore Rolex. For that exact reason and because it was cool 😎. Actually mine is in the shop now after 35 years. Still cool, but for the money a G-Shock is the best value around.

Rolex will get you a plane ticket home. Look into the story of the man who was a WWII POW and ORDERED a ROLEX WHILE IMPRISONED, had them send the bill to his father in Texas, and ship the watch TO HIM IN THE GERMAN POW CAMP. This man would later become the inspiration for Hogans Hero’s and the watch WITH ALL SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS and a LETTER FROM ROLEX, was sold at auction a few months back…

Was stationed in Panama 77-79, assigned to the 475th Trans Co. after making E4 I was detached and sent to the 7th SF for a short while. They needed a driver apparently. I noticed everyone wore a watch and I didn’t. I asked one of the guys about it and he told me the story. Though I don’t wear a Rolex, I do wear a dive watch to this day.

My brother was a GB in Viet Nam in 1965 and I remember he came home with a Rolex. I had never seen one and thought is was very cool.

That’s a really good point about the currency of Rolex watches. And knowing is half the battle.
  • @CrookDanny
The Milus Snow star was included in a “life barter kit” that the U.S. gave to pilots if they went down in WW2. The watch, some gold, all to try and trade what you have for safe passage. Rolex makes a lot of sense today.
