  • They left out the part about how all of us on the bridge at once caused it to flatten out. There were some very concerned engineers that day.
  • I love this city so much and I was born in 1993. Made me tear up to see how many people loved this bridge before I was even born

My father and my uncles were working in San Francisco at the time The Bridge was first opened. There was a 3-day party in anticipation, and they stopped to relieve themselves on the Presidio side. They were surrounded by all sorts of stunt pedestrians- on pogo sticks, stilts, tap-dancing, to be "the first person to....". When they got to the Marin side, my uncle Fred looked my father and said "Stew! Your pants are unbuttoned." Now, to be sure, I can't claim to be 100 % sure, but it is very likely that my father, Stewart Potter, was the first man to walk across The Golden Gate Bridge....with his fly open.
  • i was there, i was sruck in the middle. it was scary AF in the girdlock, but ill say one thing, it was all love. there was no violence, people helped each other out. some man lifted me out of the crowd when i fell and couldnt get back up because of the sheer crush. i was a teenager. people were kind that day and thank god because that could have been an absolute disaster in todays world.
  • 300,000 people Say each person weighs 150 lb 300,000X150=45 million The golden gate bridge got a flex with over 45 million pounds on it
  • I was there with my friend Al who walked across it when he was a kid when it first opened... We got stuck in the middle of the bridge, and it actually flattened out from all the weight of the people. You could hear the bridge literally groaning... Pretty scary...

this is so wild look how well behave everyone was
  • The crowd was a larger load than any fully loaded with vehicles! The biggest and heaviest 18 wheelers only exert 75 pounds per square foot average over their footprint. But a packed shoulder to shoulder crowd can be over 125 lbs. per sq.ft.! No wonder the gentle deck arc flattened out. The engineers had to inspect for damage and it was decided to limit future foot traffic after that.
  • @wmtrader
Not a single neck tattoo in the crowd.
  • There is nothing like the beauty & mystery of the Golden Gate Bridge with finger fog running through its span.🎉🎉🎉

Imagine bringing a bike thinking you were just going to ride across. But there’s so many people you have to push it the whole way.🤦‍♂️
