The NBA All-Star Game has been dead for years and lots of people have ideas on how to fix it but how did it get so bad in the first place? It turns out the death of the All-Star game can be traced back to one moment in NBA history.

Kobe has said the All-Star game has been dead for years and he was pushing for a change. RIP Kobe

I’m surprised Silver couldn’t fake a more enthusiastic presentation to Giannis.

The younger players follows the older players. If they’re not taking it seriously then why should they?

It's no coincidence that the All Star game got significantly worse once Kobe retired. He was the last of a dying breed that wanted to win more than anything and he set the tone in the games he played. In his prime there were other fierce competitors like KG, Duncan, Pierce, etc... who were the same way. They all wanted to compete, show respect to the game, and give the fans a chance to enjoy the greatest pick up game ever played Near the end of Kobe's career, the new face of the league became someone who has cared about his personal "brand" more than anything. Lebron was more interested in avoiding anything that could damage his image instead of competing. A brilliant business move, but a depressing trend that he started and everyone followed. If the best player in the league can duck the Saturday contests and not try in the All Star game, then everyone else can as well. Fast forward and you now have an exciting young player like Anthony Edwards saying he sees the whole thing as a "break". The worst part is that these players who are so focused on their own worthless "brand" are simultaneously damaging the much more significant NBA brand that actually puts millions in their bank account. At what point does the NBA experience a financial "correction"? Mark Cuban effectively selling the Mavs as team values hit all time highs tells me that correction might be coming sooner rather than later

A big reason imo is attitude. Nobody has that killer mindset like mj or Kobe. Back then it used to be about competition and proving your the best and all the trash talking. Now in the era of the superstar it’s about I’m not happy I’m leaving, I’ll go play with my friends on such and such team, I’ll make a super team etc. nobody is competitive or has that instinct. Instead of playing competition they see it as just playing with their friends

I actually really enjoyed the 2020 format. Make them win by quarters and then restart the score. They should've kept that

The irony about the TV deals is that fewer and fewer people will watch it since streaming has taken over. Even with streaming deals, fewer people will be inclined to watch it over other content. The NBA Cheddar Bob'd themselves

Lack of competitive spirit has killed the all star game for decades

I have been saying this and I think it's a good idea. Replace the NBA All Star Game with the in season tournament semis and finals. Turn the in season tournament into a double round robin. Still have the festivities you would during the all star game for that weekend. It guarantees you have competitive basketball that weekend.

NBA players getting paid so much is actually killing the sport. They complain about playing 65 games no real D any more, players are spoiled and unreliable to the average person.

In Australia we have a sport called NRL. We have an equivalent to the all star game in the NBA. It’s called state of origin. The best players from New South Wales vs the best players from Queensland. It is the pinnacle event in our sport. Maybe if the all star game east vs west was actually based on where the players were born it would have more meaning to them? They could represent their home. The only downside is how could you incorporate international players

Scrap the All Star Weekend. Championships, salaries, and sponsorships are all that matters to these players.

The thing that ruins everything ruined the All-Star Game. Money.

I hate what the NBA has become. But I love this channel!!!

This is the true insight of how the all stars game lost its luster .. great vid!

Larry Bird fixed the All-Star game in 2016, He said, quote: "Take a 2v2 game and make it 5v5, first team to 20 points every quarter, wins. You'll need to win 3 quarters to win the game. That will make them play defense."

Yep this is what I've been saying, the higher the salary, the more they fear injuries. This is what I suggest, paid all star game starting with huge payout. BUT each time the opponent scores, it deducts from the money they will receive. To balance this, the highest scorer from each team will receive a bonus.

Another fantastic video. You've been killing it lately!

Wasn't in the all star but Paul George's injury definitely scared some players
