It’s time for two off-roading legends to go head-to-head!

We’ve got Mat in a Land Cruiser from 2002, and it’s about to face off against a Range Rover in a series of off-road challenges!

So let’s see how the two compare. Starting with the Land Cruiser, it’s powered by a 4.7-litre naturally-aspirated V8 that can produce 235hp and 434Nm of torque. It comes equipped with a 4-speed automatic gearbox, and it weighs in at 2,260kg. We picked up this car with over 275,000 miles on the clock, and it still cost us £5,000!

Alongside that, we have the Range Rover. It dates back to 2004, and it’s powered by a 4.4-litre naturally-aspirated V8 that can put down 286hp and 440Nm. This power is sent to all four wheels via a 5-speed automatic gearbox, and it tips the scales at 2,440kg. What’s more, the Range Rover only cost us £2,000 when we picked it up!

So the Range Rover is heavier, but it also has more power! Will the weight difference prove decisive? There’s only one way to find out… Let’s do this!

99.9999% of people already know land cruisers are a winner 🏆 💪

The range Rover has gone to the scrapyard and the land cruiser still got 200,000 more miles in it😂
  • Love the fact you took tyres into account and fitted both cars with the same tyre type !

Toyota is older and has 100k miles more than the Range rover and still nothing went wrong.

That RANGE ROVER logo has lost some of its letters and now it says ran over 😂

The difference is that you will comfortable in the RR... while waiting for the tow truck, but you'll be slightly less comfortable in the Toyota, while navigating through the harshest terrain known to man.

Land cruiser won that before the challenge started. Also you gave him a point for not finishing and a point for messing up the hill decent.

James May: "As one Australian once put it to me, if you want to go into the outback take a Land Rover, but if you want to come back out again make sure it's a Land Cruiser"

The LC has driven around the circumference of the earth 10 times and still kicks ass

Interesting take on what 4WDing is all about, in all my years of off roading I have never heard of someone wanting to get through an obstacle in the shortest possible time, it's always been about who can actually get through the track safely and getting home reliably.
  • Japanese “Kaizen” versus UK “snobbery”—I’ll take a well-built beast over a name brand, any day…
  • Need an off road battle between new range rover and a new land cruiser 🙃 that will be aweeeeesome 😅

This particular green 2002 Landcruiser will OUTLIVE a brand new 2024 Range Over, let alone this Range Rover

Just another demonstration of what makes the Land Cruiser the best of the best. Utterly incredible performance from the old girl.
