HOMOCYSTEINE the Forgotten Lab Marker for B Vitamin Deficiency

Homocysteine is an amino acid which occurs in the body as an intermediate in the metabolism of methionine and cysteine.
Methionine is an essential AA and sulfur rich.
Cysteine-needed to make glutathione.

B vitamins, specifically folate, B6 and B12, are involved in the breakdown of homocysteine, blood level of homocysteine is an indicator of these B vitamin deficiencies.

Homocysteine increases the risk of heart attack, stroke and clotting. It also damages endothelial cells of blood vessels.
Inflammation, low glutathione, detoxification, stress, low B12, MTHFR defect-30-50%, 10-20% have the more severe version of it.

Symptoms: fatigue, pale skin due to anemia, weakness, twitching of the eyes, cold sores, depression, tingling/numbness.
Many alcoholics have elevated homocysteine

Vegetables-cruciferous vegetables-spinach, citrus fruits, whole grain-caution, bananas, lentils, asparagus

Supplements: Choline, trimethylglycine, SAMe, Vitamin C and E, riboflavin, B6(P5P), folate(L-5-methyltrahydrofolate), B12(methylcobalamin), magnesium, betaine HCL, MSM(methylsulfonylmethane).

  • Hi, great video! I actually had very high homocysteine at 45. It was then confirmed that I have MTHFR homozygous C677, with low B12 and Folate. I initially went on a supplement that had Methyl B12, Methyl Folate and Methyl B6 - Methyl Guard. In two months I became B6 toxic! Awful neurological symptoms. I stopped the supplement and now take the RDA of B12, RDA of Folinic Acid along with RDA B2 daily. My homocysteine is now at 7 :) :) And the B6 side effects are slowly going away, thankfully. People need to be very careful taking mega doses of supplements, in particular B6. My naturopathic doctor was not even aware of this potential toxicity with B6, but she is now. Thank you for doing this video! You always have excellent content.
  • Patrick holford speaks a lot about high homosistein levels and Alzheimer's/vascular dementia prevention. supplementing with B12 including other b vitamins, omega-3 and vitamin C .
  • Thank you so much Dr. Sung. I had no idea that my homocysteine level was dangerous. It is 12.2. I don’t have any symptoms that you mentioned, but I am addressing it with the proper B vitamins as you suggested

nteresting about diet nutrition and Homocysteine blood levels with a reading of 7 being optimal. Include foods with b-12 soil and foods providing B-12. Cruciferous Vegetables are important and a diversified diet. Glutathione production is paramount for good health. B-12 B-6 and B-9 deficiency can be the issues.

Thank you for the very clear description! I didn't understand the real root of the issued until your video! Lung Blood Clot led to discovery of Homozygous C677T. Now I use Dr. Lynch's Homocysteine support supplement instead of the pharmaceutical the doctor prescribed and I feel good. On days when I feel exhausted he also offers an L-5 lozenge I add on. Will definitely get some Vitamin C into my supplementation program. Again, Thank you!
  • @Dolphin_457
Thank you for a great video. I inherited the MTHFR-C677T polymorphism, heterozygous. My homocysteine is 11.7 My PCP informed me that my level is within the normal limits. However most of videos that I watched about homocysteine advise levels of 6 or less. My normal lab value: 5 to 15
