The sub ethnic group is Dai, which is a minority race of China, primarily located in the province of Yunnan, which I visited in 2007. This song, in its instrumental version, was very popular and heard all over the streets of LiJiang in Yunnan. I bought a CD there. I understand from the tour guide that this song has become the opening music for the Chinese equivalent of CNN there. Thanks for sharing.
