Rent control headed for the California ballot, again

Voters in California will, once again, have the opportunity to decide if landlords should face new limitations on how much they can increase rent.

Supporters of a statewide rent control measure have gathered enough signatures -- more than 600,000 -- to put the issue on the 2024 ballot, California’s Secretary of State announced this week. Voters overwhelmingly rejected similar measures in 2018 and 2020.

The initiative seeks to repeal a nearly three-decades-old state law, the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act, which prohibits cities from placing rent control limits on certain types of residences, namely single-family homes and apartments built after 1995.

My wife just got a new apartment in Monrovia for $1700 a month. That’s still massively expensive IMO but a hell of a good deal considering how nice of a neighborhood Monrovia is.
  • At this point, how does it even MATTER?! Unless you're absolutely filthy rich, there just ain't no possible way to "live". Existence is all it is now. And that is NOT enough to make all of this worth it. Why even get up in the morning anymore? SERIOUSLY, WHAT IS THE POINT?!?! Without coin, you ain't sheet.

More control means less rental availability.

Rent control is ridiculous it is supply and demand if someone doesn't want to pay rent by your own house don't try to steal someone else's why should someone rent you their house for $500 if someone else is willing to pay $5,000 would you sell your car for 500 if someone's willing to pay $5,000 why do people think they should get their rent for free stop buying your $10 Starbucks learn to manage your budget and get your priorities straight

With high inflation, maintenance and service cost going through the roof, new parcel taxes, prop 19, rent moratoriums, excessive building fees... it's too risky and not worthwhile to build and be a landlord.

If they want fewer apartments then rent control is the way to go. If a property owner can't charge what they need to to make an acceptable profit, they'll take the property off the market to live in it themselves, or sell it, or just convert it to a condo, but not take a loss on a rental.

I wish they’d implement HOA fee control.
  • @acidboi3350

How about instead of rent the tenants just pay the mortgage the property taxes the insurance which has gone up 400% in California the last few months due to all the insurance companies leaving the utilities which are about 250 a month the water bill which is about 100 a month how about just pay all that instead and do your own repairs
  • @calibur457
