New Life for an Old Wisteria

Published 2018-04-19
Each season has its own distinctive flowers, and in Japan early May sees the wisteria blossom. Many people travel at that time to see fine examples of wisteria, a spreading vine that can be arranged over a trellis to create magnificent cascades. We visit Japan’s most famous wisteria, a giant old tree transplanted 20 years ago from its previous site to allow continued growth. It was thought too big and old to transplant until one tree surgeon discovered how to safely move the huge trunk. Following her as she works to rescue trees, we’ll get a glimpse of Japanese traditions of respect for the natural world.

Whatever was spent on moving that tree was worth it, it’s beautiful.

I really liked the video. I am also a wood surgeon from Ukraine who specializes in treating historic trees and treating transplanted large trees. To work successfully, you must be able to hear what these trees tell you.

As a teen with recently diagnosed ADHD, I really wish I had gotten into plants sooner. They really do help more than people would expect. I'm much calmer when I've been around the garden and although it doesn't cure my condition, it gives me the energy to push through. Helping youth learn about plants is wonderfully noble

YouTube recommended this to me 😳, as children I dreamed of such a tree and many times Mum told me I would wake her with stories of my tree with perls and butterflies, it wasn't till later we realised it was a wisteria. I wish my Mum was alive to see this ... This Was My Dream 🤗 Stay safe stay well

  • This beautiful tree in bloom reminds me of the 'mother tree' in the film 'Avatar'.......... I wonder if it was the inspiration? Whatever must be a otherworldly experience to wander beneath it ................. Thank you for sharing.
  • Pets and gardens are very good for your soul. Just spend a little time with your plants on your patio, balcony or garden and you'll feel so much better.
