Over half a million Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar have fled brutal ethnic violence carried out by their government. While unprecedented numbers of refugees have found safety across the border in Bangladesh, their fates are uncertain. The international community has been reluctant to take action against Myanmar, and plans are underway to return those who escaped.

VICE's Gianna Toboni travels to the Myanmar-Bangladesh border to see what the future holds for the world’s most persecuted minority.

This report originally aired May 6, 2018, on VICE on HBO.

  • When you see these people you realise how small your own problems are compared to theirs. Its sad to see that there is still so much violence in the world in 2020

"So don't send us back to Rakhine, just kill us here" I honestly can't even comprehend the amount of meaning and emotions needed to create that sentence.
  • You mean the same Rohingyas that ethnically cleansed the non Muslims for which they were exiled?
  • Where were you guys when there was Hindu genocide from Kashmir??????????
  • @HeroOfTheDay16

Millions of Bangladeshis have illegaly moved To Assam in North East India , now the Rohingyas have started to move in too. It has become a major problem for the local people of Assam , They are becoming a minority in their own land .
  • In my southern state in India, the Bengladesh cheap labour in millions are building our houses, roads and hospitals. They work really hard and to be paid less, hence most employers prefer Bengladesh migrants. But the problem is the crime among them. Their men live in groups, many of them use drugs and alcohol, that the the local population watch them with fear and doubt. For instance, my neigbhour was constructing the house, and most workers were Bengladesh migrants, they were living there for few months during construction, I was scared of the safety of my family. On weekends they used to drink so much and fight among themselves, that when they left after the construction, we were very relaxed. Even the Muslim countries prefer not to accept them because of their extreme backward condition and the crime among them. I feel sad to see how they were raped and killed by millitary, but at the same time, nobody wanted to accept them due to many valid reasons. They are attacked everywhere, in Myanmar, in India, in Thailand. Unless the root cause of the hatred is resolved, these problems will recur again. And in my opinion, the root cause their problems are child marriage, lack of population control and illeteracy.

They brutally murdered non-Muslims in Rakhine before this. There's a reason why the military moved against them.
  • Omg, suddenly all my problems are very small. It's shocks my spine when they say I'd rather die here(in a dirty dump) than go to Myanmar.

As a Burmese I hope Rohingyas make it to Bangladesh

Love that vice actually show people these issues, amazing journalism!
  • As a Buddhist myself I need to say that the Buddhists carrying out these atrocities do not speak for me and definitely do not speak for the teachings of Buddha Gautama.
  • May those who died rest in peace. Sending all the love and support. Stay strong. I wish for the best and all the happiness. May they be safe. Whoever died may they watch over their loved ones and protect them. 🥺❤️

I'm Indonesian. Thank you for reporting this to the world. It is very sad to watch. It's difficult to believe that this kind of thing is really happening during this period. It's so difficult to watch. I feel angry and so sad. Not because I'm a Muslim, even though I'm a Muslim, but I feel sad because I'm a human too, just the same as they are. But on the other side, I feel happy that there is still existing an Amazing journalism like what Vice does. thank you very much
