Why was there a Dig Dug MMO? Why did the Dig Dug MMO not play at all like Dig Dug, but instead like Dig Dug 2? Why is Dig Dug canonically an absentee father? I'm in so much pain.

Who would you rather have as your father, Dig Dug or Big?
  • @GoldStorm07
Pac-Man and Dig Dug: two Namco arcade mascots whose wife left them.

"Miyamoto told me that this inspired Mario" is the game developer version of "My dad works at Nintendo"

I guess you could say the DigDug lore is deeper than you think .
  • Arcade games have a lot of lore. Like, did you know about the lore for one of the Space Invaders games? In 2073, a hyper-intelligent race of aliens found a Space Invaders machine floating in space after it broke away from a garbage ship, and the aliens then invaded the Earth in the year 2091, with their attack strategy based on the video game. I am not making any of this up.

Conceptually, the idea of combining the “above ground” and “underground” Dig Dug games using the DS’ two screens is really clever. Shame about the execution.

My favorite characterization of Dig-Dug will always be his appearance in ShiftyLook's Mappy series, where he's just a chill dude who really, really likes drills and has a 25-year-old bottle of Crystal Pepsi fermenting in his car.

Don’t forget about Dig Dug’s best appearance: the officially licensed Mappy animated web series, where Mappy works at the company Nyamco because he suspects its boss, the cat from the arcade game, is using the company as a front for illegal activity. The other office workers are various Namco characters including Mappy’s two best friends, Dig Dug and Sky Kid.
  • its clarrified in namco high thats his wife left him because he liked drilling too much and didnt pay her enough attention and he didnt want susumu to end up like him this is why his older son hates him (ataru hori) the whole mr driller story in that game is actually stupidly well written and i didnt expect to shed a tear to a story about a little dude who just enjoys drilling a lot

Hearing the phrase "Official NAMCO Dating Sim made by the Homestuck guy" nearly hospitalized me. What even is this series?

The reason for Taizo's divorce with his wife is actually a bit different in the Namco X Capcom continuity, they vaguely imply something regarding a tragic event. That is never 100% elaborated upon. And also Taizo is a freaking Digger from Megaman Legends in this continuity! And, I really wish he and his wife still appeared on the Project X Zone duology. As I felt that the whole thing with the event that led to their divorce was building up to something that just... Never came.

Dig Dugs history almost makes Kingdom Hearts' story look straight-forward. Almost.
  • @tipulsar85
The fact that I didn't hear about the MMO before isn't surprising. That it happened at all is.
  • Surprisingly enough, Dig Dug 2 was actually my first dig dug. It was on Namco Museum DS and I was surprised when I found out about the first one
  • @akiradkcn
"written by homestuck's creator" Oh, everything about this game makes sense now

I actually loved Dig Dug as a kid, always had a soft spot for that little game. But now that I know more about him? I'll never trust anyone again. Especially after hearing how he personally thanked Croc for inspiring him to star in a video game, I have it on good authority...

    >Kevin accidentally played a game that a sequel to a classic "I got some work to do."
  • @bonedude1286
I like how DigDug singlehandedly created 2 different types of fetishes. 3 if you want to separate inflation and popping.
  • If you want to see how deep the Dig Dug lore can be you can always check the UGSF Timeline (Dig Dug, Mr Driller and Baraduke are part of it) wich includes games like the entire Ace Combat series (tho canonically the UGSF timeline starts with AC3 and AH and Infinity are not canon) Galaxian, Galaga, Bounty Hounds, Star Luster, Starblade and it cancelled sequel Starblade Operation Blue Planet, Mizuiro Blood wich is a weird comedy game with the style of Taiko but it somehow has a blog sequel that has an extremely depresing epilogue that connects it directly with Operation Blue Planet, a cancelled strategy game named New Space Order and many many more

Taizo was such a shitty dad that it caused Susumu's older brother to run away from home as a kid and become a rogue driller, and ALSO lost custody of Susumu's little brother lol
