Threadripper 7000: An EPYC History of AMD Threadripper

Early in 2023, KitGuru took a close look at AMD Threadripper Pro WX series and we were deeply impressed by the 64-core 5995WX. The snag, of course, is that the 5000 Series uses Zen 3 architecture and we knew that Zen 4 Threadripper had to be just around the corner. Happily that time has arrived and the new Threadripper 7000s gain 1GHz on clock speeds and max out at 96 cores, which is superb news for rich enthusiasts. Read more here: bit.ly/41uaKLx

  • so much good info crammed into 20 minutes, the big channels should take note there is more to this content that a drama based thumbnail....

well I thought I know quite a lot about threadripper, but that was genuinely very educational. Thanks Leo - Merry Christmas to you and your family

Thanks for the retrospective. My first HEDT was Threadripper 1950x and after a while I upgraded to the 32-core Threadripper 3970x which I still use. It's a very capable machine for multi- threaded workloads even today. I might upgrade to the 32-core 7970x, but only if prices drop a bit. Especially the motherboards and RDIMM memory.

Yes! I hope you will compare the low-end Threadripper 7000 with the low-end Xeon W CPUs. We already know that it's a curb-stomp at the high end but is it the same at the low end? I also hope you will take a look at large memory configurations. Let's see how these platforms fare with 1 TB RAM! My brother uses software that takes advantage of many cores and high RAM so this will be of particular interest to him. If you do get access to the low-end Threadrippers as well as the high end ones, please look at cache performance. I would like to know if cache performance declines with higher core count due to the increased chance of a cache miss. Obviously you'd need software that uses more than the 8 MB of L3 cache. Of interest to many viewers may be Excel performance. Excel uses one thread per sheet so if you have truly massive spreadsheets then Excel can really take advantage of Threadripper. IIRC VBA is still single-threaded so don't use that. Merry Christmas to you and all at Kitguru.
  • I really appreciated this - very entertaining and some performance results too. I know a few of our guys in work are looking at 7000 Pro.

Had me captivated from the start to the end, thanks for that Leo and merry xmas and all the best for the new year.
  • I always smile at the physical size of the threadripper processors, they are mahooosiiveeee - that gigabyte motherboard is next level, Luigi would love it.

Wow Leo, what a great end to 2023 for me, ive saved this video for reference, best video ive seen you do thanks 😎
  • whether you are an intel fan or not, this is seriously impressive architecture
  • @chromerims
Entire Threadripper series is jolly triumphant. 👍 7000 looks great. Multi-channel Ram is superb.
  • Very entertaining watch Leo. Expanded my knowledge. I have used intel for so long as I just game but fascinating to see these high end processors I will never own.
  • Loved this video Leo. Not something I’ve spent a lot of time watching before.
  • @justindavis7600
Magnificent engineering. Will never own one but love to see how far ahead amd are in this ultra high end market. Makes my intel core i7 seem positively insignificant.
  • That 7000 series is really impressive. the pricing just makes my eyes water, but its not really for us gamers is it !
