Sequoyah's Cabin: The Birthplace of Cherokee Literacy

Published 2024-06-03
Sequoyah was the creator of the Cherokee Syllabary transforming a set of written characters representing syllables into written form developing the Cherokee language.

Sequoyah built his one-room log cabin in 1829. Located in Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Sequoyah’s Cabin Museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was designated as a National Literary Landmark in 2006.

The actual cabin sits inside a stone memorial building built by the Works Progress Administration in 1936 and is surrounded by a beautiful 10-acre park. The cabin is furnished to appear as it might have looked when Sequoyah lived there. There are relics and documents associated with his life on display.
